Hey guys...me, usual with Good-News/Bad News.....You know I can make any arrangements here for July...however, I just found out July 15-22 is scout camp here. Nick & Mike go for the Webeloes weekend then most likely Sunday I'll need to drive up there & switch kids as Boy Scouts runs Sun-Fri
Anyhoo- if we schedule events on that side of town those days I'll be better off. That would be places like Idlewild park which has the Mr Rogers land I've mentioned before or the 7Springs resort if we want to do any mountain stuff. Fallingwater is in that ares & Kentuck Knob though the tours themselves arn't open to children under 12- the parkland is of course. Also there is Laurel caverns, Ft Necessity battlefield, Ft Ligonier, and the huge Nemicolin Woodlands spa & resort. They all have websites. Ligonier is a woodsy, artsy, antique shop sort of area but right next to Idlewild. Also, right up the road is where Steelers hold training camp at St Vincent's college. It shopl be in full swing then & we could poossibly even get some tours/autograph sessions with pulling some strings thru the ARC or something.
Oh BTW -Hershey is 5 hours from Pittsburgh. There is Kennywood Park,Sandcastle Water Park, the Carnegie Science Center(which has the hands on museum as well + an IMAX theater), Children's Museum, Pittsburgh History Museum,Natural History Museum, the PNC ballpark is right across the street but we should check as we're hosting the All Stars this year & wouldn't want this to coincide or rooms will be hard to come by & crowds will be bigger....now you see why my college friends used to call me Polly Pittsburgh ~oh & we have a NASCAR track literally 2 miles from us~ races Fri nights + the Renaissance Festival (think it's Aug though) Check hotels for New Stanton or Irwin exits of turnpike~ they may be less $ than downtown

Just wanted to add a funny. You know last year we rented a van to go to Indiana. Well, we traded in the Explorer for a Suburban the other day. Cody runs up and yells, "Going to Ohio to swim with Chase!!"" and gives me a great big hug. Took me forever to get him to understand that we weren't going to Ohio but got a new car. He was telling everyone all day that we were going to Ohio. hugs, Kristi

Ok, since SuziF mentioned about the baseball all-star game being hosted at PGH this July, I checked and found out that it is going to be held on July 20th. I know that they have events for a couple of days prior to the big game. I think that if we are going to do the Monroeville Holiday Inn, we need to decide quickly so that we can hopefully get the rooms we will need.
What does everybody think?

....Barb, I thought the info I'd found said it was July 11....the actual game, with the carnival type events of it running for like 3 days before that. We can try looking it up again at www.thepittsburghchannel.comMy one suggestion was going to parks & stuff on the East side of town where the All-Star game won't be an issue~ near the steelers training camp & Idlewild park

Ok, my bad!!!! I stand corrected!!! Suzi is right...... the all star game IS on July 11th. It was late when I was trying to find the info and on the Pirates website there is a picture of the MLB commissioner announcing that game would be held at PNC Field...... the picture was taken on July 30, 2004 but I only caught the July 30th part not the year!!! I really should not try to do searches after my brain is scrambled after a long day with the kids home on vacation and then working all evening! According to the Pirates website, the activities around the game ( at least the official Fan Fest ) run from July 7th to July 11th. pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/pit/fan_forum/asg/fanfest_main.jsp After looking at all that they are offering I want to go!!! Maybe I'd be able to get autographs of my 2 favorite Red Sox Hall of Famers..... Yaz and Pudge Fisk!!! I'm a hoping to win a lottery jackpot now!!! It still remains to be decided if we are going to stick to the original Kennywood/Sandcastle agenda or go more in the direction that Suzi has suggested. Either way, we should start to firm things up so we don't get blocked out of the hotels we've been looking at. Barb

I guess I had NO idea that Pittsburgh was so huge! I thought it was like the other get together places, where we just picked a hotel and met there and had a blast! So.............of the 2 parks, I personally like the looks (from websites) of Kennywood/Sandcastle park. Is it too much to ask for us to find a hotel near there that has an indoor and outdoor pool, a free breakfast, free parking and large rooms??? LOL Ok.......maybe that's a bit too much. I guess the one thing we have to shoot for is an indoor pool, because if all else fails and the weather turns bad the kids can swim!
I researched hotels last weekend, but didn't come to any conclusions yet. It's hard when you don't know the area. Suzi and Barb and Pat..............tell us what to do, ok?

Okay, here's what I got so far as I just called someone from the Pitt. area. (They no longer live in Pitt. but family does & they will be calling them tonight to get the scoop.) Kennywood is definitely the park to go to. It has the oldest carousel, so for those who like to go round & round.... Posting more as I find out. I gave them Susan's list LOL By the way I live clear on the other side of the state just N of Phila. Pat

Ok, did some more research and finally got to talk to the buds down in PGH......... They also recommended the Raddison Green Tree. www.radisson.com/pittsburghpa_greentreeTheir "best available" rate for a room with 2 double beds is $85. I'll try to call them in the AM to see what if anything they can do for a group of say 10 rooms. They meet several of Susan's previously mentioned wishlist in that they have both an indoor and outdoor pool, free parking, is fairly close to Kennywood ( I'll ask about how long a ride when I talk to someone there )...... downside is no free food!!!!! Just one more option...... as if we really needed anymore, it's hard enough to find something that will please the majority of us if not all!!!! Barb

I am open minded about where we stay. I am just happy we are able to go.
As soon as we find out I guess the next step is to book our room. Just let me know and I'll do so. We don't want to miss out.

Barb...Greentree isn't really "close" to Kennywood...it is milage wise but you have to cross the river 2x in between. The University hotels are closer...anything near Pitt/Carnegie Mellon & Duquesne colleges is close. ...I think I mentioned at least to Susan, all 3 parks are owned by the same co. Idlewild is more of a family park & has it's own inclusive waterpark. (How Kings island was but a more laid back atmosphere~ victorian architecture, etc) Kennywood is a theme park...6 rollercoasters...both have old carousels (Kennywoods is on the historic landmarks list ) Idlewild though is truly better suited for our kids but everyone has their hearts set on Kennywood I think.(b Wear comfortable shoes as they have a multilevel parking lot with escalator & chairlift to the front gates. (no shuttle busses) I know the old photoalbum had pics of my kids in both...I'll hafta see if I can repost some. Sandcastle is just up the street from Kennywood & a seperate all day admission price. It's like Watercountry & all those parks....big place, wave pool, 2 regular pools, kiddie area, adult area, not much food choice, but really nice. There's also the Science Center if we're doing that route....one part is a hands on sports place that the older kids like though Merideth didn't care for it last year.
