Sheryl,
Little Ryan had constipation issues as well. He once went 8 DAYS with out a BM, he was miserable. We used Miralax since he was just 8 months old with his Doctors recommendation of course. At the time it was by Rx only, now you can it buy OTC. He never experienced any cramping with it. It was at the time a miracle worker. Ryan is now 5 and he no longer needs it! As he grew and got stronger he was able to get all that poop out on his own. Good luck!

Massaging is a great thing. It doesn't always help with the movement of the poop but it does seem to make Elizabeth feel better. The path of the colon though is from th right to left. The small bowel ends in the lower right side of the body and the large bowel starts there and moves toward the rib cage across the body to the left and down to the pubic bone. Thanks for all the great suggestions so far and we will keep you updated.

Hi, i feel i am an expert on the subject. In fact our son was so bad he was hospitalized twice because of severely impacted stool (so not fun). Nothing natural ever worked for him and we tried everything. Definately get tested for hirschsprungs so you can take that out of the equation (we did and he was fine) also we tested for celiac and thyroid, all clear there. So basically, he just had really low low tone and just couldnt push it out. We did the fleets so often and we also tried Senna syrup which helped but tasted awful and we didnt mix it in food because we didnt want him to have food aversion.
So that all said, we got a prescription for miralax (colasce sp? wasnt strong enuf). Miralax was a miracle from heaven. Now it is over the counter and we used it on jameson almost every other day since 8 mos old. I highly recommend it. It doesnt have a cramping effect and really softens the stool. You can give a verrrry small dosage (like 1 tsp) to see how it works. As he got older he has been able to push more on his own but still what comes out is just a wonder that something that huge can come out of such a little body. We still use it from time to time when he is showing constipation.
I think miralax was the best thing for us! Better than going to the hospital for impacted stools.
Definately talk to the dr but i hated seeing our son suffer and we were concerned that he would stop trying to push because it was too painful or too hard so i am all for the miralax route.
Good luck and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks again everyone for your input. We have tried lots of your suggestions and were thinking about Miralax when the pear and apricot nectar kicked in. It has made such a difference. Elizabeth is happier and we don;t have to worry about all the suppositories.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear you appear to have found a solution to the problem. So, maybe now you're ready to wash your hands of the whole affair. -- Bob
