Those are few and far between when you get to be 14, but we hit one this weekend. I say "we", because I had to have the guts to let Jason try it!!! LOL
You guys might remember CC telling us how Collin let Chris go into the gas station alone for the first time. When I read that I thought that was a GREAT idea. However, Brian just about croaked at the thought of letting Jason do that.
Well, yesterday I finally had the opportunity to try it without dad around! I took Jason and Ellie to Bronner's for the first time (you know, world's largest Christmas store . . . the one they built specifically for people like me and Laurasnowbird ) and we had a really good time. Jason loved the store and being able to pick out his own ornament this year.
On the way home I knew he was thirsty, but I really didn't want to get Ellie out of her carseat just to get a bottle of pop. So, when we stopped for gas I gave him a $5 bill and instructed him to go in and buy his pop (he had left his wallet at home otherwise I would have had him use his own money). I was watching him the whole time and was thinking that he hadn't walked far enough back into the store to have picked out a pop. I could see him standing in line and saw the money in one hand and couldn't see anything in the other. I kind of panicked, thinking he didn't know what to do. So, I stopped pumping gas and as I was getting Ellie out of her carseat, he came running up behind me hootin' and hollerin', one hand with my change in it and the other hand with his bottle of Sprite!!!
You guys, he was so proud of himself and I was so proud of him on so many levels. First, that he understood exactly what to do, second, that he didn't try and buy a bunch of other stuff and MOSTLY that HE was so excited - it showed me that HE truly understood that it was an important moment for him.
I told Brian, ok, you should be really, really proud of your son even if you are mad at me. He wasn't mad just a little freaked out!!! LOL He admitted that we need to loosen the apron strings a little and allow Jason to try to do more on his own.
Phew, glad it turned out like I was hoping it would.
Thanks CC for sharing Collin & Chris' story!
