Excellent...I know we have tried as a group from UNO...but has Oprah ever done anything on DS besides showcasing a married couple? Has she ever interviewed moms... One time we tried to contact here with a story idea...of having an UNO segment where many of us meet each other for the first time. I know its almost impossible to get on the show or to even get them to listen to your idea. She was in amarillo about 10 years ago doing the hamburger trial...and there were some articles about how hard it is to get on her show in our paper. One thing it noted was that sending an envelope that is very "different" sometimes attracts attention...anyone up for this? ? I also thought it would be fun to do an adult with DS makeover segment...but surely then some of our "own" might take it wrong...seeing it as a statement our kids need to be made prettier....when in reality...adults with DS like Emily would love... same as me to get a new..."look"....But think it might be worth a try to see if she would showcase UNO in light of what a support system for any disability can mean to people. I like the article as it is so true that the best ambassadors for DS are our children! I wonder if "what not to wear" would do someone with DS? It could be an interesting segment.

I liked the article. It does sadden me that the perception of people with Down Syndrome are severly mentally retarded...that just drives me crazy! My daughter is alot of things, funny, sweet, bright, quick, stubborn....but certainly NOT severly mentally retarded! GRRRRRRRRR....

Oh Jackie I like that idea. Makeover, well maybe not...hmm, I think only because like you said it's to make them "prettier" and that doesn't seem nice, but on second thought..., that's what makeover's are for anyway, right?LOL I think the GP out there doesn't understand how our kids and adults are commonly overweight...it may make it seem like they're showcasing their flaws if they did a Makeover Show w/Ds people highlighted? I dunno JMO. But making unique envelope would really be a great idea...something bold with graduating seniors pictured and kids with medals from Special Olympics, and just others in their workplace attire, etc...all on the envelopes cover! Sounds like an eye catcher to me! ;D Kristin, "what not to wear" I dunno, maybe not IMO, maybe great strides made in the community as they are just regular people like you and I and hold down jobs and do a darn good job at it! ;D So showing them in a positive light...instead of needing makeovers??? JMO you guys check out this cool article too www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/general/view.bg?articleid=1076741&srvc=rss

I thought the same thing Dawn w/ the first article. First paragraph impressions were not good. The rest of it was happy I love Cape Cod. Was only there for a week but i'd go back if I could. I just love the little cottages. I want a bucket from her. I'd save it as a keepsake Thanks for sharing

Talking about makeovers, everytime I look at Cassies eyes, I think, wow, does she ever have the perfect eyes for eyeshadow and liner. I cant wait to do her makeup. I used to work for Sears/Estee Lauder cosmetics and I did makeovers every day. It will be nice to do my own daughters makeup one day... :-)

Well...having an adult daughter with DS I feel a bit differently about "make overs". Emily does not wear a ton of make up and usually doesnt fiddle with it at all unless she is going out somewhere important. But like anyone else she likes the attention she gets when she is at her best...and she does like new things in regards to her appearance. It IS amazing too what a tiny bit of eyeliner and eye shadow do to make her shine.
I guess I look at the concept of makeover in a bit different light because if a show was done right it could stress that our kids are no different than anyone else...and a good makeup artist could say...kindly...Emily's eyes are her best feature...so we want to highlight them...enlarge them slightly...add some shadow...etc...and we want to define her lips with a liner...etc etc...same as they do when they used to make up other women. The didnt exactly say they had appearance flaws...they just positively addressed how to enhance certain features...I think it would have a positive impact on the viewing public and mainly because our girls personalities would also shine through and their pleasure at their new makeup would be exciting. But...I am not sure I would have felt this way when she was younger. I just have some different perspectives now. But...I always thought she was BEAUTIFUL

She has had a compact of Clinque powder base for years...and it still has a long way to go....LOL.
And didn't mean to hijack the post...I think the article is excellent and I would love to meet Lucy.

Jackie, off topic...but I see in your Siggy that your hubby is an endocrynologist??? Cool, I have a question 4 him plz! Is it true after the radioactive iodine therapy that I need to stay "away" from my son for 3 whole days? The procedure is to drink a mixture that targets the thyroid...I have hyperthyroidism. This radioactive iodine (sounds awful huh!) will go straight to the thyroid since this is where our iodine is asbsorbed and processed...anyway it'll kill the thyroid shrink the nodule ...boy this is getting complicated and gross too! ;D Anway, could you ask him if it's true that I need to be away from Jelani that long? I'd so appreciate it. I have an endo whose always sooo busy and takes days to get a call back... THANKS!!! D~
