Hello book lovers!! I read this book and it was pretty good. It is about a couple that attend Harvard and are pregnant with a boy that has DS. Some things she says and the things she encounters are disturbing but all in all a pretty good book.

I would agree. Actually, no, I think Expecting Adam is quite a bit better than "pretty good." It's been almost 6 years since I read it, but I thought it was a very good book. Maybe a little mystical and maybe a bit too special, but a very good read and quite well written. Believe Martha Beck went on to become a TV personality, in Phoenix I think, and a sometime contributor to Oprah. I think Adam continues to do well, about grown up by now. But, of course, I could be overrating the book. It may be overly anecdotal. But I liked that, those were my favorite parts, Adam meeting the new neighbors wearing only galoshes and his mom's bra, batteries for Christmas, smelling the shrubs at Kmart. It was one of the first books we read when Charlie was born, the Stray-Gunderson New Parents' Guide and Expecting Adam. I've recommended Expecting Adam to expecting moms, though some should perhaps take it only in small doses. -- Bob

I read this RIGHT after Erin was born....so I was all jazzed up for the "mystical" part of it....figured there was something so special and purposeful to having a child with special needs.....but all in all......I would give it a thumbs down for me.....no offense to anyone ! I LOVE to read and will read every spare second....but this book didn't grab me....and you would think it would after the emotional roller coaster I had just been through with the "surprise" news and upcoming heart surgery. I recall jumping around this book.....being bored ....but really wanting to read it, so I'd skip ahead hoping I'd get into it....but just couldn't. I saw Martha Beck speak at a DS conference here about 4 years ago. It's funny because she seems to focus VERY little on the Ds now.....Adam is "just" her son and that is GREAT that DS is not the most important factor .......BUT .......at a DS conference.....wouldn't you expect some DS talk ?? And yes she writes an artivle in the Oprah magazine and has been on her show several times.....and again.....if you didn't know she had a son with DS.....you'd NEVER know by her writing or talking......anyways......just my 2 cents PS>>>>>I Do always remember the "smelling shrubs at Kmart" and batteries for Christmas.....and did LOVE that !

Allisa, I agree with you! I was at that conference and received a free copy of "Expecting Adam". Since I had to check out of the hotel by 10 a.m. and my flight wasn't until 5pm,and I was by myself at that point..I had a lot of time to kill. I read that book while I waited around for my flight and then on the plane. I finished it before I got home. Jennifer was only 9 months old and I was a sponge, absorbing everything I could get my hands on concerning DS. Well, the book had some funny parts, but when I finally finished it I thought" That was a little freaky!" I have often thought I should reread it now that Jennifer is older and maybe I would have a different opinion.
