Ok, so we've been having sleep troubles with Ethan. He was getting up every single night sometimes between 1 and 2am and climbing into our bed. Most nights, we'd put him back in his bed at least twice, then be too tired to keep getting up, and let him stay. (Of course in the beginning, we were putting him back 4 or 5 times, with no better result.)
He was sleeping with his sister, and I decided he had to go back to his own bed. They both resisted that idea strongly, but I put him back in his bed, and put up two gates, so he couldn't climb over. He woke the first four nights crying....so we were really no further ahead because we were still getting up. I was thinking about just letting him cry it out, then decided to give melatonin a try.
We bought the timed release formula, because he has no problems going to sleep, just staying asleep. I was shocked when he slept through the night the very first night and we continued it for the next five nights, with the idea that it might help him learn to go back to sleep on his own. The last three nights, we haven't used it, and although I've heard him sound like he is waking on the monitor, he goes back to sleep on his own. Eureka!!!!
Here's the weird thing though.....this is the first time in at least a year that he has slept through the night consistently, and I started getting notes home from school that he's tired. At first I thought it was avoidance, but started noticing it at home. He fell asleep in the middle of the day in the cart at Wal-Mart today. What the heck? I don't think we can blame the melatonin, cuz we haven't used it since Wednesday night.
Anybody else have a kid who started acting MORE tired after they were getting better sleep? I'm off now to start researching, but am wondering what you guys have seen.
