Saturday Joy came down with a virus that included high fever (105 degrees), vomiting, headache, etc. By Monday, she was a bit dehydrated so her ped drew blood and put her on an i.v. Didn't admit her (whew!), but did rehydrate her in the clinic.
While there, her ped came in and told me he was concerned with her blood work and wanted the oncologist to look at it ... he was concerned that it looked like leukemia. WHAT?
Fortunately, the oncologist just felt her immune system was compromised from the virus, which caused her white count to be pretty low. Whew again.
Now we're home and I'm freaking out. Five days after she first got sick, Joy is still running a 102 temp, coughing, sleeping ALL day, and complains of joint pain to the point that she won't stand on her right foot. She also has a weird bruise on that ankle.
Perhaps she somehow injured her ankle (I don't know how or when, but maybe), but now I'm wanting to go see the ped again tomorrow to make sure the oncologist was right about the blood test. I am scared, quite frankly.
Symptoms of acute leukemia include fever, infection, malaise, joint pain, bruising, headache ... all of which she's had in the past few days (oh yeah, she has a sinus infection).
Please talk me down and remind me that it's virus season and I need to stop worrying. Or tell me what you would do at this point. I'm really worried ...

I would be worried as well. Yes, it could be she has influenza (it often comes with joint pain, fever, etc.) but the whole white count thing would freak me out. I'd be wanting more blood work done! I'll be saying a prayer that this is all just virus related and not what we all fear the most!

I would also be worried, and you are doing the right thing by taking her back to the ped. You do need to get this straightened out. Yes, it sure is flu time and all that nonsense so it very well could be a nasty bug. I know around here in Ontario, so many things are still going around. My son has had a really bad fever and sore throat , achy pains and all that. He had such a bad fever that he called me from his gramps house and told me the people upstairs came and stole his bed. Well, they didnt of course, but the fever he had was not good obviously. I must say, I did have a bit of a giggle when he told me he needed help and his bed was stolen. I picked him up right away anyway and brought him here. My son is 18. Anyway.. dont think of the worst until you know what it is. There is no sense getting yourself all worked up like that, because it could be just a bug. I know easier said than done, but keep an open mind. Every year, the bugs get worse, and thats what it could be. Let us know how things go for tomorrow.

Hopefully its from the sinus infection...I know when Eric gets that, he's down for about 10 days. But you are right, I'd be scared too! Let us know what the docs say. You guys will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Well, are the docs concerned? If the docs are concerned.. I'd be. I think you need to have the ped and oncologist monitor this situation and draw more blood.

I agree, I would be scared also. However, try to remember that it IS flu season, and this year we see patients with it hanging on FOREVER! I know Elizabeth had it and she's still recovering 2 weeks later. But I think you're doing the right thing and would insist on another blood draw. If for no other reason than to give you more peace of mind.
Keep us updated! We'll be praying it's only the virus, and waiting for confirmation from you.

we got a bad report one time, and were on our way to chicago...travelling on I-44 at rolla, we had to make a decision on whether to go to shauna's law school graduation (head east) or get a phone call and head to the oncologist at the Univ of Mo (head north)
it was rotovirus....and you never saw a family so happy to get the news of THAT!! (it also skews the blood counts off to look like the big L)
we just had a blood draw....everytime she goes 3 rounds of antibiotics, and we still haven't kicked whatever we're dealing with (ear, sinus, etc) then we do a CBC.
I don't panic anymore...i just stay aware. We can be called the lucky ones in ways....as we have that little 'knowledge' in the back of our minds, and know to stay on top of it....gettting it nipped at the git go is 1/2 the battle.

I can totally understand the concern. I am a worryer by nature, so...I'd be on the phone calling for another check up. Better to be safe and I would need to hear them tell me again that it is only the flu... Please keep us updated...I sure hope Joy starts to feel better soon...

Had to quick /quick post on this one.. Jenifer.. Gabe had the EXACT same thing happen after a flu.. and I had the exact same reaction. Went to Doc and he took the blood tests but also told me it was probably from a worst case secenario (like leukiema) to something far less sinister.. which for the life of me I can't remember the name of.. but after any bad flu or cold Gabe gets these sympotms which include an inflamation of joints and can be helped by a prophylatic dose of ibeprofin. (BTW, any one can get this.. not confined to our kids w/ DS). Now when he gets a bad cold or flu we /school make sure he gets ibeprofin which seems to work better than asprin etc. Anyway.. so hope that your experience is the exact same as mine. Post up when you have more info.. I TOO freaked!!!!!

I got up first thing this morning and made an appointment with Joy's ped.
Then she got up and she was FINE. A little warm still, but not having any joint pain and actually quite chipper considering her disposition over the past few days.
So I watched her closely until 2:00 — just in case — and then called and cancelled the doctor's appointment. Right now she's in the next room having speech therapy, and she's laughing away.
I was worried for nothing. It's what I do. When you become a mom, your heart is no longer your own.
Thanks to all of you for support, prayers, advice ... I know I can always count on my Uno friends.

Jenifer, I didn't get a chance to post before, but I am so glad Joy is feeling better! It's so hard not to press the panic button when one of our little ones is sick and it might be something serious. Relax now, put your feet up and have some Ben & Jerry's .....you deserve it! Deane

I wouldn't say you worried for nothing! You have a doctor throw a scary word like that out there, how can you help but worry? Sooo glad she's feeling better! ;D
