Does anyone have the recipe for Dirt Cake?? Jared's little brother, Jacob, will be turning 3 in June & I thought it would be a really cute bd cake for him.
I'd like to make it in a regular cake pan (rectangle) instead of layering it in a flower pot. (Am thinking it would be easier to serve this way.)
I'd also be open to any other ideas you want to share for bd cakes. I usually make them myself since it's so expensive to go to the bakery. In the past I've done a red barn with animals, a castle, a magician's hat with a rabbit coming out, a bunny cake.....gosh.....I've forgot the rest, lol.
Anyway, looking forward to any replies!! Thank you in advance!!
Have a great week!! Sherri

Sherri - this is the recipe I have for dirt cake - the only time I've seen it done, it was like this one...with pudding instead of cake itself.
Home Cooking Dirt Cake Ingredients 1-1/2 to 2 pounds chocolate sandwich cookies (like Oreos) 1/4 pound (1 stick) margarine 4 packages instant chocolate pudding (made according to directions) 12 ounces non-dairy whipped topping (like Cool Whip) gummy worms
Instructions Clean a new plastic flower pot (a rectangular window box is perfect) and a gardening shovel or trowel. Crush the cookies in a food processor or place them in a ziplock bag and use a rolling pin. The crumbs will resemble potting soil. Mix crumbs with melted margarine and make a 2-inch crust on the bottom of the flower pot. Combine the pudding and whipped topping, then spread on the crust. Put gummy worms on the pudding and spread the remaining crumbs on top. You can arrange some of the gummy worms so that their heads poke out of the "soil". Refrigerate overnight. Wrap the stems of some artificial flowers with foil and arrange in the pot, then serve the cake using the trowel.
Note: This recipe can be made non-fat by using skim milk and non-fat cookies. You can omit the margarine, which will make the crust crumbly, like the "top soil".

I love making my kids cakes too. For Meghan's first b-day I made an elmo cake, her Christening I made a whole cake topper out of fondant..I bassinette w/ a baby inside this one: www.pastrywiz.com/cakes/babycrib.htm(except in pink). I did a veggie tales cake for her second, (with an airbrushed larry & bob on top) and for Matthew's first this year I copied the napkins from his party and made the cake look like that. (multicolored w/ 3-d bears on top) What is the theme for Jared's party -- or is there anything in particular that Jared loves? I just got a new kids cake cookbook...there were some adorable cakes. A jungle scene with teddy grahm bears, that looked like tarzan and animal crackers. Another was a sheet cake decorated to look like an underwater scene w/ those colored goldfish crackers as decorations. Oh and Parenting -- I think it was last months? had some adorable cake ideas. If you do a websearch there are quite a few websites to get ideas from. Your cakes sound so wonderful! If I had to do it all over again, I think I would be a pastry chef :-) laurie

That sounds really cute... my kids would love ! I usually make their cakes as well, and when my oldest was about 4, he loved construction, so I just made a large sheet cake, used green frosting & bits of coconut to look like grass, then I placed new toy trucks on top along with brown sugar for dirt and nuts for rocks... he enjoyed decorating it with me.... we did the same idea with bugs the next year... used real rubber snakes, etc and made it look like a jungle.
