Becky,
The Goonies was filmed really close to where I live... In the beginning of the movie, they show a car race on the beach,,,you'll see giant rocks in the water...hundreds of feet tall...that is Haystack Rock... I live an hour south of there.....The rest of the movie was shot in Astoria, OR..... If you ever have the chance, drive the Oregon Coastline, it is catastrophically beautiful... awesome.... I wish I moved here 40 years ago....and not just cause the mortgage would be paid off. We moved here from Florida about 8 months ago.

Has anybody seen Billy Elliott? My all-time favorite....
A good comedy is Waking Ned Divine....very good....

Bob, I must confess.. I love "Billy Elliot" ;D Also "Waking Ed Devine" one of my all time favorites too.. those Irish/Scott fillmakers can make some GREAT movies. Speaking of which I've been waiting and waiting to watch "Calendar Girls " and it's finally at my local video store so I must raid the couch for enough change and go rent it It's nice to watch some movies that are funny without being totally crass

Loved Waking Ned Devine!! Anytime it's on, I watch it....And of course ET is another great movie. (and the reason my husband wouldn't let me name our son Matthew 'Elliot'..because of my ET impression, LOL) Some of my other favorites are Mrs Doubtfire and Jack...
Has anyone seen October Sky? and is it worth watching? I just read the book and loved it, but the commercials for the movie didn't impress me...but I just read the reviews on Amazon and they were pretty much all 5 stars. Bob - you might enjoy this book or movie...it's a true story of a boy growing up in a mining town, and he works very hard to persevere and overcome obstacles. There are a few sad parts to it, but overall it was really terrific. It's written by Homer Hickam (book is also titled Rocket Boys, I think, before it came out in paperback) and is autobiographical. laurie

OK...here is another for everyone....if you havent seen The Truman Show with Jim Carey...go check it out...its about a reality show that has kept Jim Carey in sort of a bell jar...creating an artificial environment where nothing every goes wrong ....until he accidentally figures it all out.....I sort of got cold chills watching it because it mirrors the sort of life I had been creating for my Emily....troubleshooting..making sure her life had no bumps in the road...etc.......
It certainly set ME on a new course with her after seeing it....I plan to watch it again sometime this week and see if I have made progress...LOL

It is soooo hard to pick a favorite !! wether it is book, movie or song... there are just so many out there. I would recommend that you READ Prince of Tides if you liked the movie, because the book is AMAZING !! SO much better than the movie !! ALL of his books are fabulous...Pat Conroy Also, a GREAT movie I think is Shawshank Redemption.... I can't pass by it on TV without watching it.... I know it line by line but never tire of it. That was a fvaorite story of mine by Stephen King.... and the movie followed the story completely....also 2 more great movies that happen to also be by Stephen King are Stand by Me (based on his short story The Body)and the Green Mile, These are not your "typical" Stephen King stuff

Thank You all for your movie (and book) recommendations.... Some I have seen and some I will make a point to see.... Someone in a reply to this post said to see Secondhand Lions....I did and LOVED IT !!!! Thank you.... Started watching Kill Bill Vol I last night and couldn't get past the first 15 minutes.... Too much blood and cruelty from the moment the movie started.. For those that don't mind watching sad movies (my favorite kind), you should see Life as A House....it is awesome....
