Here in Florida the week before school starts we get a whole week where all school supplies, clothes, shoes, acessories, and back packs and things are all tax free..I myself love this..I was wondering if any other states do this..My girlfriend cam down from Mississippi and stocked up for her son she said that they don't have this in Mississippi..Anyone else have this great tax free week? P.S. this is not limited to kids and teens clothes only Just curious Michele

Michele - yes, they do that in New York -- I think all over, although it may be limited to our counties here on Long Island -- the last week in August and then again in January or Feb. Our clothing tax had been reduced until recently - it was 5 1/2 % (originally 8 1/2%) but they just raised it 'cause I guess they were losing too much $$. The county next to me (which is a 5 min drive for me) had zero % all the time...which was great - but that went back to the regular state sale tax too :-( funny...I never go out of my way to shop that week but I think I will this year -- both meghan and matthew need tons of new clothes for fall and winter. nothing fits from last year. laurie

We have tax-free shopping the last week of August and in January here in Western New York also. I tend to do the big back to school shopping at an outlet mall in Pennsylvania where it is tax free all the time at least for clothing and shoes.

We don't have a tax free holiday in Michigan. My family lives in Texas and I know they do have a tax free holiday before school starts. Chris

In Iowa we have a tax-free weekend in August. The mall and Target, Wal-Mart, etc. become packed with shoppers trying to get school clothes, supplies, etc. at an added bargain. It's nice because the stores run good sales to get shoppers in there. I was thinking shoes were exempt from the tax break, but I could be mistaken. Nonetheless, it's a great way to save some bucks!

For anyone in Massachusetts.... THIS satuday... August 14th is our tax free holiday. I don't think I've heard it "advertised" much, but I do bookeeping for 2 retail stores & I know it's this Saturday. The item must cost less than $2.500 and can only be for personal use. Businessses are not supposed to take advantage.

Talk about penalizing the people who don't wait for the last minute! And I would so hate shopping in crowds that I'm not even sure I would want to buy that week. Money savings versus sanity...hmmm...

I always forget about Iowa's tax-free weekend and buy Les' clothes and school supplies a week or two before.
Well, maybe next year...
