Does that make sence? Anyway, Have any of you read the books: *Late talking children by:Thomas Sowell *Play to talk or *Communicating partners by: JD MacDonald *Children w/DS: Guide for teachers & support assistants in mainstream primary & secondary school by: Stephani lorenz *Classroom language skills for kids w/ DS or *Early communication skills for kids w/ DS by: Libby Kumin I was doing more "research" like I tend to do and ran across these books. They had good reviews but I thought i'd ask the Uno land if anyone out here has read them. (or one of them) I'm really trying to find something to help me, help Brookster. We do alot of saying things over and over and over etc... but i'm becoming stumped. Just me trying to do more than the "experts" say I should be doing at this age. "Whatever" I say to them Every little bit helps I say. Just wondering.... if not, thats ok

If you read one of these, please review it here for us, Jennifer. They sound fascinating. I've never had a late talker - they must get the gift of gab from their mommy Chris too

I highly recommend the information from Dr. James MacDonald. We use a lot of this with our son and he's very verbal and social. He's still late, but I'm confident not only that he will talk, but that he will be a good communicator which is the big emphasis of this program. We went to a 1 day workshop and a private consult with Dr. Jim late last year and he's amazing. He also has a yahoo group where you can ask him questions or chat with other families that are using his ideas.
Libby Kumin is the expert on the technical/medical side of things and is very good as well. She also has a couple of videos about DS and speech.
A combination of ideas from these two experts has been very helpful to me to work with my son as a natural part of our day and to know what to watch for as we progress. Having read them, it also helps me understand and communicate with his therapists - I can be very clear about my expectations and what's important for our family.
Hope that helps.
Joy

So I just finished the book Late Talking Children by: Thomas Sowell How do you say... plhhhhh... tounge sticking out spittling all over No good for me. It's about his "group" of families who were late talkers. The first half was a bunch of stories about each child. Only one mention of DS. This is what it said "My son is also language-delayed. But, unlike your son, he will never study computer science; at best, he will be the salad maker at Taco Bell. My son is eight years old and has Down's syndrome." That right there p***ed me off!!! Kinda at the mom or dad who didn't think more highly of their son or the author not saying anything to make it sound better. All in all I finished the book and will not recomend it to anyone!! One down, more to come. I also read Misdiagnosis and dual diagnoses of gifted children and adults. That book was way more insiteful (sp) It's about ADHD and other disorders. Our kids are GIFTED. Like we all didn't already know that huh?!!!

Hi do u know I have not read one of these? My goodness must've missed em. Anyhow Olivia is a great speaker.. She has gr8 intelligibility and a huge vocabulary. Make sure when u talk to her she is watching your mouth and how its forming words. Also what we did about her age is take many many many pictures of Olivias favorite things and people. Then I would on an index card underneath in bold black marker write the word. THEN I would try to find out the sign for that word. I would use a combo of all three methods and Liv loved doing the sign in conjunction with saying the word. We made a HUGE deal out of every word she tried to imitate. We had the Olivia cheer which she adored and who wouldn't eh? He brother was a huge help too as he had a large vocabulary and he is a little over a year older than her. Everytime he taught her a new word he was beaming with pride and we too also made a big deal of his successes with her. He was so proud when he taught he to say the word volcano. OMG he was in heaven don't ask me why volcano and to a 4 year old nonetheless who lives in the heart of a big city but hey ..lol Any useful books fill us in so I can pass on the word to some friends. ((((HUGS))) Steff
