Welcome back to school and here's your free dose of lice.....AUGH!
We've never had them before. JT brought the note home that there was a case in his room. I decided to check Grace, just for fun, eeesh.....not so fun.
I just ran to the store to pick up all of the supplies, plus a bunch extra, the lice killing supplies were in the aisle. Guess the awful humidity isn't helping the situation.
Guess I know what we're doing tonight.........
Anyone have any suggestions?
Oh, a tip! The school nurse said that there is a herbal shampoo, "lice be gone" that can be used as preventative. I sure wish I knew about this two weeks ago!

Main #1 rule of lice. .they need AIR to survive and breed... so suffocation is the key You can only use those OTC products so long...it's a catch 22. They say use... then 7 days later use again.. but don't use more then twice? I remember reading that when Regan had it. She had it BAAAAAD when she was 6. RID didn't even TOUCH the lice.. I had to use some other OTC product. Ped said those darn lice are getting more and more resistant as years go one! The other thing I learned, because of the suffocation thing.. was that you can put vaseline and a plastic cap on the head and get the same (non toxic) results as the OTC stuff. So, we also did that.. yes, hers was that bad that after using the OTC stuff.. I had to switch to the vaseline and cap idea. I'd make her wear it all day LOL! That also did the trick!!! I feel for you.. I really do. Regan's went on ALL SUMMER that year he was 6.. I missed SO much work it wasn't even funny... .and yes, I had it too! We did get the RID spray and I sprayed things I couldn't suffocate or get rid of.. like bedding, pillows, ect.. and then I put in plastic garbage bags her stuffed animals, hats and things we wanted to keep. And to be honest.. I DID throw away a bit. I just did. As much as they say it's not from "uncleaness", I was still disgusted and threw away stuff due to those feelings. A.

we kept having reaccuring lice problems on and off for three years... some people get lice easier than others.... we used rid... the herbal stuff, raid, vaseline and mayonaise plus he found an old hair dryer and cooked them ,, all these things work to a varying degree....we finally found out the best solution to get shook of these vermin......... we changed day cares.... heres a little something to think about.... when ur kids in preschool or kindergarten and its winter time where do they put their coats preschool .. they all hung next to each other on a rack,,,,, kindergarten a big pile in a closet... doesnt make sense i told my kids to take their coats to their desks and put them under it... one of my kids brought home a note that coats go in the closet with everyone elses........ not after i called the principal! one more thing its harder for lice to attach themselves if u use hair spray,,, i assume if u use lots of styling gel this would help too, cooking oil help gets them out(knits) and somepeople smear lard in their hair(wy aboriginal people put bear grease in their hair) btw those knit combs arent worth a *^&*& when your childs hair is as fine as angel hair.

Awww crap....that's a lot of work!
We've got lots of stuffed animals suffocating in black plastic garbage bags in the basement. I've done the steps of the RID stuff......what a pain.....especially the worthless comb they give you!
The girl who checked me out at the store, gave me a sorry little look, and I said, "yep, it sucks". She said she use to get lice every year at the beginning of the school year and the only thing that worked on her was mayo and a plastic bag. I should have put the $40 worth of shampoos back for a couple of jars of mayo.
The school nurse did say that it is very rare for african americans to get lice, especially if they use hair grease. (Being an adoptive, mixed race family, I just happen to have a jar of hair grease.) I greased up both boys tonight, and just about greased up Grace, but decided her hair probably needed a break.....tomorrow she's getting greased up too.
I treated myself with the shampoo. Pretty sure Grace is the only one that has the little buggers, but I was SOOO itchy. Never can be too safe?! Grease for everyone tomorrow.
I read on something too, that coats shouldn't touch, I wouldn't have thought of that. Dawn

The nit combs that have metal teeth work the best. I bought two...one of them had long teeth that were pointed on the end. Clarice has extra fine hair, and it worked on her. The plastic combs that come with the kits aren't tight enough.

Dawn.... Headlice are NOT our friends either... Two girls with long blonde hair became a nightmare in their first year of school!! Here is a link to a really good fact sheet with the MOST effective method for dealing with these mini beasts. Note...it does say it is not necessary to freeze toys or go to extremes with cleaning as they do NOT survive away from the human scalp...less work for you there!! www.population.health.wa.gov.au/Communicable/headlice_resources/Head%20Lice%20Fact%20Sheet.pdfGood Luck with them!! I know your pain!

Yes... Lice don't like hair gels, hair spray, ect... so keep greasing the hair Chester! LOL I know.. it's SUCH a pain. And I agree with Victoriasdad, we learned the different ways schools kept their coats, ect.. and the ones that hang them all close to each other, are breeding grounds for these pesky bugs! Then that Summer with Regan... we took that whole Summer to get them gone... she went into 1st grade and darn it! 1st couple weeks of school GUESS who came home with them AGAIN!!!! NO NOTE from school/teacher that they were going around.. and I guess MY daughter was playing with the lice infested head child! I let the school know I was NOT too happy that they didn't let the parents know lice was going around...since I spent ALL SUMMER trying to get rid of this lice!!!! But... I was a pro at this point LMAO So, it didn't take my long to get them gone. And at this poing I had cut all of Regan's hair off. So, it was easier to manage. A.

our last bout with head lice my ten year old daughter had them so bad we had to cut her hair short. she was really embarrassed because she had very long beautiful hair .. and the school has a policy (dress code ) that students cant wear hats to school.... we called the school and told them that shawnee had a head injury with stitches and wanted to wear a hat to cover the sutures ... they said fine.... (i guess that makes me a liar) so we put a bandage on her head, she enjoyed making up adventurous stories on how it happened(i guess that makes her a liar too) lololol and that was the last time we had them... btw they make a electric sonic knit comb that spose to vibrate the knits off with sound waves or something, my wife bought one i dont remember how well it worked...one more thing my wife use to wash the kids hair with rubbing alcohol,,, this works really good with the live ones because it suffocates them... u tip the childs head back and place a towel over their face,, and pour it on their hair, remember not to get it in their eyes , and the vapors will take your breath away hence the towel, this is a more harsh way of treating them because of the vapors but it really works pretty good on the lice maybe kills knits too........
