I have been asked to give a talk about 'disabilities' to a mixed group of people so I am asking for suggestions eg. the joys or pitfalls of raising a child with disabilities, the cost etc. etc. I have confidence that you will come up with some good information ;D.

This is a great opportunity to provide some great information about Ds. You can dispell myths - that might be a good format for you. Cover some common myths. You are the best one to choose which ones to cover for your area. E (Molly's mom) did a montage a few months ago that had a format of: "they say..." "truth is..." or something like that. You might want to go back in the general forum to something like April or May.
Have fun & let us know how it goes! Chris too

I would add to stress how similar people with DS are to everyone else. Sometimes, people get the impression that our kids are really different. Just because many of them can't communicate, doesn't mean they don't want many of the same things...from riding a bike, to an invitation to a birthday party.

1 Most people that adopt special needs children go on to do it again ... it can't be that bad.
2 more than half of ALL people will at some time have a disabled family member .. be ready
3 We are more alike than we are different..... liking chocolate, a walk on the beach, hugs from grandmother etc

Did you do your talk yet Pauline?? You really need to start posting these things in the main forum!! ;D I think you will do great on your talk. Just talk about what joy the kids bring to you... I like the myths idea....just be candid and talk! A.
