Ok ...remember my silly campaign to get people to vote for me as Best Artist in Amarillo through a contest run by our local newspaper...well guys...I won! So thanks to everyone who voted and who sent it on to others. I hope one of you is the lucky winner of the hospitality basket and weekend in Amarillo TOO... ;D
There is a big event planned to go with THE BEST OF...Oct 25th...and its actually in the huge party area at our Gallery Mall where my studio is. So as we say in Texas..."Y'all Come!"

Woo hoo!! Go Jackie!! I voted, but I never win anything, so I won't be holding my breath for the basket My DH is a "heatin' 'n' air" man, and he once set up a booth that actually pumped cold, conditioned air into the tent. Popular booth. Maybe you'll get that kind of booth Chris too Woo Hoo!!

didnt mean to put "down" heating and air...where would be be without it...LOL... Just meant I think this will be a more "commercial" event and a fine arts booth would be sort of lost in the sea of vendors. Since it is being held out at our art mall www.amarilloartists.com/I think my studio will stand on its own without the help of a booth at the actual event. Since many of the votes were for food places I am sure there will be many booths with food samples...so even the service companies like "heating and air" should get some business by being tucked in among those. The paper plans a large insert in Sunday Oct 8 edition ...and I am sure its their intent to sell ads to most of the people voted in...cept to starving artists!!! The woman I talked to said she recognized my name ;D. She said SHE counted the votes...didn't have the nerve to ask her if she enjoyed te ones from New Zealand, France, UK, and South Africa... Jackie

Well Done JAckie !!
Have FUN at the "Big Show"...
From your description...even if you dont get much business...at least you will be ableto eat well!!
But sometimes...it is the "little different" guys that get the business!!
While people are strolling round looking at the same thing over and over...YOU will stand out, and hopefully for you, you will have something that apeals to them!!
I have a beautiful metal Fish Sculpture thing on the wall here that I found in a "Business Expo" aimed at the large Agricultural market in our town..he was something different among things the same...I know a few other people that bought stuff from him too... So It CAN work for you!!!
Best of Luck on the day!

Thanks for that advice Tammy...and I agree. However I don't know if I have ever told you about WHERE my art studio/gallery actually is. It is located inside what was Amarillo's very first MALL way back in the late 50's and early 60s. Not that big. After the arrival of two other malls it sort of fell into disrepair and housed just temporary commercial endeavours. About 4 years ago the current owner who is also an artist herself decided to rennovate it and turn the inside into an Artist Mall. She rented ...at ridiculously low prices...the spaces to artists with the understanding we got them 'as is' and it was up to us to improve them. I really lucked out. I came in about 6 months after she started renting and got a spot that had just been vacated...it is in PERFECT condition....new carpet, running water in the back. Lucky Me.... Anyway...now there are about 50 artists out there...some studios have more than one artist ...and the nice part is that we can be open or not...since they are working studios it is totally up to us. Of course there is always dissention among us from those who would like us to be open normal hours. The public seems foregiving about the hours but it probably would be better if we all kept more regular hours. As for me I LOVE the freedom...to have a life and also be an artist! The inside of our GALLERIES AT SUNSET (the name of the old mall was Sunset Center)...also has a lovely atrium and the area that used to be food courts has been turned into a walled off inside huge party room. This is where the newspaper event will be held...and my gallery is almost directly across from the entrance way to this room. You go right past my studio/gallery when you enter the mall, too. It just seems like I should get pretty good exposure from my location at this event...but...I will take your suggestion seriously...and maybe the "odd fish" in the middle of more commercial people will make me stand out. When I find out the booth prices I will make my decision. Jackie

Jackie, whether or not you do have a booth - and it sounds like you won't really need one - you should make up a brochure to hand out at this event. Be sure to include your newly-acquired title of BEST ARTIST in AMARILLO on the brochure and some pics of you and your work. I'd say put a coupon on it, but I have no clue how a coupon would work in an art gallery unless you teach classes. BTW - I knew that you weren't disparaging my DH's line of work - I was just jabbing back in fun. He has fun with using a hick accent and saying he's a heatin n air man (the high-brow term is HVACR technician - wow ). So your comment made me grin Chris too
