Thought I would post this here... my post from last week regarding testing and evals...
****************
I learned something last night and thought i would share I went to an IEP workshop with a friend. It was very cool.. it was just all about the IEP process and the laws regarding it. It was nice to know I learned some new things and what I do tell other parents is correct LOL
One thing my friend and I learned... some of you may already knew this.. but I didn't know all of it... is this...
Ok.. yes... every 3 yrs there is to be evals done. Now.. withing this... if you have an IEP and it's time for your 3 yr eval and at that IEP they say "so, you think we need to check areas or do any new testing?" and you say NO... then THAT was your eval And then you get another one done in 3 yrs from THAT date. Some districts skate by with this. Also... let's say you had the whole gammet of testing done at 5... your 3 yr eval/testing would be then at age 8. THEN.. if you get say a Music Eval done the next year at age 6? THAT changes your new 3 yr eval date and your child then wouldn't require evals/testing until 9. Make sense? This is the case with Russell He had a music eval done and completed Fall 2005.. he was 7... so, our 3 yr mark will now be 10 yrs old.
Now... I know alot of districts do ALL the testing again every 3 yrs.. psych, ect... and legally.. like we stated here we can deny it.. they really don't HAVE to offer the whole gammet or DO all of them. So.. if your district is implying they HAVE to do ALL of them.... nope. You can deny say the psych testing and they can't DENY services if you deny testing.. one does not effect the other. Now if you and your district discuss and do all of them, that is one thing. But I always thought when the 3 yr eval came around the automatically HAVE to do ALL the same gammet of testing... and that is not the case.
Also... I think we all know this... but you can request testing done at anytime.. remember to put it in writing But... we learned there are LOTS of testing that is out there they NEVER do which could be valuable to our kids... but we have to ASK for it. There are actually certain language tests... sensory tests, ect.. they will not JUST do every 3 yrs... you have to ask for it.
Also... she said there is two dates on the IEP.. one is the IEP date.. and one says "LAST EVAL" date.. kinda thing.. .they are by each other... make sure you know that date. A mom last night... released someone just put in a new date on her son's IEP on the last eval date which was VERY wrong and false... child wasn't even at school that day!
I learned that like in our district.. how they do the Autism testing... there is some language test that SHOULD be part of this.. which isn't. Since lang/comm is such a big part of Autism...it's a shock to know there was a key test that should have been done with Russell. WHO KNEW!
And.. for us with truly non-verbal children.. like Russell... you can request they administer non-verbal tests...I think the IQ was one of them she mentioned... I looked in my notes but of course.. I didn't write THAT part down!
Oh.. and like here in MO they SAY they have to test your child by age 5 or so.. for a school age DX... by law.. they just have to test your child by age 7. And you should have had a 0-3 test around age 2 1/2 she said.
It was a very informative meeting.
