I don't post much here, but I've GOT to share this:
We have been using Love and learning (not REAL consistently- maybe 2 x per week) since about 6 months. We have been using Signing Time videos (1-9) probably daily for about a year. My dd will be 3 this month. She IS READING. For real!
I made index cards with a printed word on each card (5 words total- different word on each card). No picture. She is not yet talking (at all really). BUT she does sign maybe 100 words. So I used words from Love and learning and that she knows the signs for. When asked to sign what the word is on the card, she is correct about 80% of the time. (And I think she’d be 100% but sometimes acts goofy.) And we have not worked much AT ALL with her with the cards. I know we could add more and work a bit with her and she’d take off. Now, this is just sight reading (not phonics) and just a few words, but it IS READING! I am amazed and impressed. And I would say 90% of her “ability” is from the videos.
I started this as one night I was doing some paperwork and half watching her while she watched a Signing Time video. The word bath came up and BEFORE they said the word or had a picture of it, she signed bath!
I had asked the school to buy some very beginning reading materials for her a while back and they said they can’t until they are at least three as reading is not a skill learned before that. HA! Needless to say, her therapists are astounded. Beginning to read at 2 would be a major accomplishment for ANY child, much less a special needs child.
SO I encourage you to get some of these videos. Our kids have GREAT potential. I like the videos as SHE really likes them, they educate her, and she can do it without me (or a brother or sister). (We put them in, but then she can watch alone.)
Yours in Christ,
Kathy
