Sam is suppose to start kindegarten on September 4th and today I received a letter about open house from his teacher. Its a different teacher then the one we met with back May. Its a little annoying being as nobody called us and let us know but we were also reassured that when they hired the 8 new teachers for the district he would not being changing classes. GRRRRR!!!! well this new teacher better be willing to learn some sign language and very quickly. Jess

Maybe the new teacher already knows sign language. You still have time, don't you, to call an IEP meeting to find out about this new teacher's qualifications & whether the IEP's requirements will still be being met with this change? You probably don't want to wait until Sept 4 to find out, and you certainly shouldn't have to.

Just a thought but maybe you and Sam could go in and meet this new teach before school starts, if you want The Teachers are usually in a few days prior to school opening so they can decorate their rooms. So maybe it would be a good time to meet her When Chris was going into Kindy in our home town public school they had no teacher for the program till August. She called me and we decided it might help Chris to go in prior to meet her and see the class room. It really helped lots on both ends. But as I said, just a thought CC ~

Yes.. this has happened to us a couple times but it's worked out fine. The thing that sucks about the IDEA laws.. is that we are given "placement" on the IEP ... NOT a certain teacher. Now you and I both know the a change in teacher can totally change the dynamics and yes, the "tone" of the placement.. but by law... we can't teacher shop... it's just appropriate placement.. that's that.
And if you are wondering about signing, ect... if any teacher doesn't know it, call an IEP meeting and make sure she gets her training. THAT is part of the law too..suppliments and supports include any teacher training needed for that suppliment and support.

We met with his special ed teach, who I love today and one gal who will be his main para going into the year and it went really well. I will not have an opportunity to meet with his teacher until open house which kind of sucks but with a para in place one on one to begin with hopefully it will work out ok. Now I just have to get the busing in place, they have him changing buses and being dropped of a block from our house. Jess

We are working on changing it but if it ends up being a problem I am just going to drive him. We live in a small town so its on my way to work and since I work in headstart the schedule is pretty similar but I should know something this week. Jess

Small town or not... why the bus hiccups? They should be offering bus service to and from your house! I sure hope you get something figured out!

Okay so now I am more annoyed with the whole bus situation. They have him all set to ride the special ed bus but when I asked what kind of seat will he be in they looked at me like I was an idiot. I said he needs to be buckled him and the response I got was well thats not in his IEP oh I about lost it. They are telling me that my 29lb five year old is going to ride the bus with no seat belt when there isnt even an aide on the bus. Now I understand the whole IEP crap but personally I think this is ridiculous. That is a huge safety problem that can easily be taken care of and by monday morning if there is not a seat in place then I will make sure he has an aide. Jess

"have him all set to ride the special ed bus but when I asked what kind of seat will he be in they looked at me like I was an idiot" WOW here in my neck of the woods if one rides a special ed bus it is mandatory they have seat belts on them and if you are real tiny like in preschool they require a car seat be used. I will say if a car seat is needed then YES I know that should be in the IEP so that it will be provided, as they just don't have extras on the bus, KWIM but ... I have never ever heard of it having to be put in an IEP that the seat belt has to be buckled Man Oh Man were they kidding CC ~

So I went to work today and I happen to work in the headstart program. I found the lady who is in charge of early childhood special education and asked if she would make a phone call for me and she was like absolutely no problem, within an hour I had a message from special ed at the elementary school and he will have a carseat on the bus and can start riding Friday morning. Now seriously how hard was that, I am glad I didnt have a battle on that one because its silly and I like to pick my battles. But so far that is the only thing we have run into and Sam is doing wonderful in both of his rooms and is happy as a clam to go so YAY! Thanks for listening to my vent Jess
