Hey Everyone, I am going to observe three different classes for Emma on Friday. Right now they have her placed in the "Severe Handicapped" classroom. I really don't want her in there. I will be observing two "Moderate" classrooms and the "AM K" classroom. I really want her to be able to peer model kids with appropriate behaviors. They tell me that the other kids in the class are writing their letters and numbers which Emma is not. I hope though that she will watch the other kids and maybe pick some of this up. They skipped her over K so she could go full days, so she missed a lot of what they learn in K. They are really complaining about the aide situation though so I may have a bit of a fight on my hands. I just wanted to share and I will let you know what I observe.

Good luck. Try not to let them feed you lines about the aide stuff. Just go see the rooms and figure out what is APPROPRIATE for your daughter. THEN, if she needs an aide (and any other supports) for that placement to succeed, then you request all supports, aide included. Try not to worry about the support part right now!
good luck!!!
A.

So what if the other kids are writing? Some kids with DS will NEVER write (my Angela is 11...barely is able to manage her name. She does everything on a keyboard instead.)
So go observe the classroom, decide what YOU Feel is most appropriate for her, and make your decision then. Use the term "Least restrictive environment" a lot when voicing your placement choices.
