Hi all... Chicken little here, just preparing for tomorrow's ABR...and even though it's a routine procedure I'm never the less uneasy, go figure? Even his surgeries in the past haven't prepared me one bit, what's wrong with me? I should be able to handle anything considering what he's been through. This is a piece of cake...but I'm a piece of work about now. I'll send updates and oh I almost forgot... Chris...margaritas at my house, everyone invited.

We were there a looong time, 5 hours, we checked in at 9:30 and then into pre-op and they gave me Persed to pour in Jelani's mouth,...a way to sedate him before they gave him the general anesthesia. He became groggy but soo giggly. I was allowed to be in the operating room when they put the mask on, grape flavor, and Jelani giggled througout, and was smiling and wouldn't just go to sleep, LOL He kept opening and closing hs eyes and smiling and giggling...and then finally he was out. After about an hour and 1/2 I was called to go see him in recovery where he was fast asleep. The audiologist said he has a mix of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss, but she wants us to go to his ENT to remove tons of earwax. I thought they would have removed it during his general anesthesia before doing the ABR? It took him an hour in recovery to fully wake up...he had an IV/pressure cuff/ oxygen mask...the whole 9 yards but was slow to come to. Now he's home and a little ball of energy and just ate like a horse...LOL They'll run another test later in the soundbooth to see if the earwax out makes a difference in his conductive hearing. But mainly he's 40-50 decibles. Glad it's over, but now there's a process of going back and forth to Ucla for the hearing aids. Thanks for wishing us well.

Glad to hear Jelani is home and doing WELL ;D Have to agree why they did not take the wax out right there and then Hmmmm Sometimes I think these docs don't think. Hope you don't mind me asking, what kind of Doc did the procedure? HUGS to you and Jelani CC ~

Hi CC the Senior Audiologist performed the test and as a matter of fact she just called me and said she'll fax his report she completed to me now... And I also inquired as to why the ear wax wasn't just removed then and there...she said she wasn't allowed to do it. She also said it's in there in such a way that she believes it may be hard and only an ENT can remove it, not me. So I'm waiting now for his ENT to get him in earlier than her next appt. Sept 8 ... The Audiologist said she'll put a note in ENT's box to try to see him sooner. I'm just hoping it's not another sedation all over again, but how else would they get the stuff out? Then we'll return for a behavioral test and fitting for the hearing aides. All in all I'm looking forward to him getting the hearing aides sooner and to get used to them before the upcoming school year. thanks for asking, boy this is an adventure

I agree with you, would have been soooo much easier on you both if they could have removed the wax today! I'm trying to imagine Nicholas sitting still while someone dug around in his ear! Not a pretty thought! Glad it's over and recovery went well! Amazing how much energy they seem to have after having been under anesthesia, isn't it?

Wow, Dawn! I'm sorry that when it came down to the day, I was just celebrating our IEP being over I am glad that Jelani had such fun with this one Grape-flavored gas? Too cool. If I ever have to be put under, I'll ask for that! Great timing on the hearing aids - getting used to them before a new school year is a good idea. Tell me what it means when you said that he's "40-50 decibels" - Davey (my 4-y-0) can scream near 120 dB in an ear-piercing pitch (my first-soprano, choir-member daughter calls him a "First Screamano") - but I know that is not what you mean

Hey Dawn, Glad it's over!!! But I love that they have "flavored" gas. I too am a little bummed about them not removing the wax while he was sedated. Seems to me they would be prepared for such things. GRRRR.... I sure hope he gets his hearing aides before school, your right, he needs time to get use to them before he goes into a new school year! YOU MADE IT THROUGH IT, DID YOU ASK FOR A QUICK BLAST OF THE FLAVORED GAS???

It takes about a month to get aids, ordered, fitted and programmed. J. has a pretty significant hearing loss, so expect that he's going to HATE his aids at first! The shound is going to be very intrusive to him. Usually the audiologist will start with the aids volume programmed very low and leave it like that for a couple of weeks. Then each week they'll increase it a tiny bit more. It'll take you at least through the summer to get him to full volume.

LoL Chris and Shirley... no I didn't take a whiff...but maybe next time ;D Thanks Leah, I may need to ask you a few things in the future about the hearing aids. But our first task is getting the wax out, every 6 mos it builds back up. I need to be more diligent using those ear wax drops. It's amazing he's not had one ear infection. And yep Valerie...he was a ball of energy after the anesthesia wore off...but he also became constitpated and I got a call he was crying and laying his head down in school. Need to up the Miralax today. Boy he's been through it, but they say they don't remember a thing after being sedated. I wonder if he has a hangover, lol just kidding.
