Hi have any of your kids tested positive for hashimotos ? Liv tested positive a long time ago but her numbers are not high enough to give her meds for it. Do u always end up with it if u test positive. I mean do u always end up having to take meds if u test pos. Like will Olivia someday have to take meds as her numbers indicate it or can u test positive and never have to take meds. Just curious if anyone knows.(((HUGS))) Steff

What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis? Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a condition caused by inflammation of the thyroid gland. It is an autoimmune disease, which means that the body inappropriately attacks the thyroid gland--as if it was foreign tissue. The underlying cause of the autoimmune process still is unknown. Hashimoto's thyroiditis tends to occur in families, and is associated with a clustering of other autoimmune conditions such as Type 1 diabetes, and celiac disease. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is 5-10 times more common in women than in men and most often starts in adulthood. Blood drawn from patients with Hashimoto's throiditis reveals an increased number of antibodies to the enzyme, thyroid peroxidase an enzyme (protein) found within the thyroid gland. As result of the antibodies' interaction with the enzyme, inflammation develops in the thyroid gland, the thyroid gland is destroyed, and the patient ultimately is rendered hypothyroid (too little thyroid hormone). (((( Hugs to Olivia )))) I don't know anything about it but I thought i'd post what it is for victoria's dad and others to see Oh I might add that I only knew right where to go in my book marks to find this cuz hubby's doc thinks this might be something he has too. They have done 3 biopsys on his thyroid and still don't know what s wrong.

wow Steff, no advice, sorry. but I have hyperthyroidism and a small goiter and I have been on PTU for 4 years now. I think it's graves disease, not hashimoto. I have a blood test every 3 months, and the medication brings the thyroid to normal levels. I plan to have the radioactive iodine therapy to destroy the gland (ugh), my friend did and it's no big deal. I just have to be away from Jelani for 3 days I'm told, and I haven't found anyone to watch him that long!
I hope Liv's thyroid is monitored closely by an Endo, it seems common in our kiddos. I think maybe Lia, (Liasmom) has this too. please let me know if you need a reference to any Endos here in LA if you need one, mine is wonderful.

Ped Endo at UCLA? No. He has Dr. James Bradley (cranial plastic surgeon)... Jelani had an eroded septum and it was reconstructed, and he has his Audiologists there too and of ourse Dr. Nina Shapiro, ENT...who incidently had a baby recently I have an ENDO in Inglewood I've seen for 5 years, and she sees kids too and takes our lovely 'med insurance.' If you want the #, let me know.
