Hi all!! I haven't been posting as much as I should lately but I really had to share this one.
As those of you that have been around for awhile know, Andrew is quite the escape artist. We have had to put extra locks on our doors and other safety features as well. Just when we think all is safe he will figure out the new contraption and off he goes again. I have found him behind the wheel of my car in the driveway several times now. When I ask him "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU"RE DOING!" He calmly replies "store" or "Brandon" as if it's all okay because he's going to pick up his brother Brandon at school or is going to the store. He gives me this look like...ummm, what do you think I'm doing? What's the matter with you lady? *sigh*
So with his big 4 year old birthday we figured it was time to switch his car seat to a booster seat because he is getting to big for me to lift in and out of the other one. He was thrilled! He thought he was such a big kid. He absolutely loved it. He also took to the rules of the new seat right away and never gave me a hard time about them.....no unbuckling until the car is off, sitting with back against the seat etc.
So.....We went shopping last week and I needed to stop and get gas. I never pay in cash I just step out, swipe my card and begin to fuel up. Well...I'm almost done filling up when I hear a "click" and realize Andrew has unbuckled himself. He has moved up to the drivers seat and has managed to press the lock button on the door so all the doors are locked. I quickly stop the gas pump and start feeling my pockets for the keys. I LEFT THEM IN THE IGNITION!!! I couldn't believe it! I always take my keys out with me....I don't know what happened that I left them, but especially in the ignition!
Now I'm in full panic mode but trying not to appear upset to him as I tap on the glass window and say "sweetie...you need to open the door." To which my ever so obedient 4 year old replies "NO!" Here's the rest:
Me: No really honey, open the door for Mommy.
Andrew: NO!
Me: come on Andrew ...open the door!
Andrew: Nope...Brandon.
Me: Andrew, you can't get Brandon by yourself. Open the door and I'll drive you.
Andrew: ok, umm nope... lock
Me: yes I know it's locked. Push the button on the door to open it. No...not that one. Try agin. Try again. Try again. Good, almost try again. No Andrew....keep trying....Andrew...Andrew don't touch the shift! Don't lean on the .............
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP (horn going off)
At this point I feel a tap on my shoulder. It's the man getting gas next to me. He wants to know if I want him to have the attendent inside call the police to open the door for me.
Now I'm beyond paniced. I honestly don't even remember if I replied to this man or not. I'm almost in tears watching in horror as my son is pretending to drive while trying to turn the keys in the ignition. I just kept praying that he couldn't turn the keys.
Now the attendent from inside comes over. Just as he asks"Can I help you somehow?" I hear another "click". I swear I have never moved so fast in my life! I don't even think Keanu dodged bullets in the Matrix as fast as I ran and opened that door.
I flung open the door so quickly I scared Andrew. He jumped and then ever so sweetly said "Hi MOM" Grrrrrrrrr I asked my famous question "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU"RE DOING!!!" and he looks at me with that same expression (like I should know) and calmly says "Brandon." Well I swear, if there weren't witnesses around I may not be typing this to all of you right now.
Needless to say....I will NEVER forget to take my keys out of the car again!
