I know this should be in medical but i'm so confused and i need some help here. Brook is real sick. I just now got her to sleep. She was throwing up, well not really THROWING UP big time but little barfles a few times day before yesterday. Then she got REALLLY hot this am about 2:30-4:00am. 103.4*!!! She has never even been a normal 98.6* always 97* maybe 98*. I was giving her tylenol .08/a squirter full. She was not eating, no napping, hardly no drinking. I was getting really worried so i called the hospital and they said to give her tylenol AND motrin at the same time. Plus i guess i wasn't giving her enuf tylenol, they said two squirters full. Has anyone ever done this before. I still have three hours before her doc opens. She is sound asleep now and will hopefull sleep for more than 1/2 hr. some east coat person hopefully is awake and can enlighten me b/c no west coaster should be awake right now. The chickens are still asleep

When Laura had pneumonia the first time, she had a fever of 104.1. The doc told me to use Tylenol and Motrin, but to alternate them every 3 hours. So you are actually giving the Tylenol every 6 hours, and the Motrin every 6 hours, but she was getting meds every 3 hours. For example: give Tylenol at 6 am, Motrin at 9 am, Tylenol at noon, Motrin at 3 pm, etc.. This really worked with Laura, and I have used it several times since when her temp has gone over 102.
Getting liquids in will be the most difficult. Don't give her cold liquids, but room temp is easier for her tummy. Aim for frequent sips of liquids rather than big gulps. Watch her pottying, she should still be going tee tee (medical term there), if she goes 6 hours with none, call your doc (my doc always told us 6 hours was the limit).
My goodness, I hope she gets better quickly!! Not a fun way to start the summer.

I sure hope she is feeling better really soon. WE too have been told to do the Tylynol and Motrin but like Sharon said...we were told to alternate them, not at the same time...Sounds like alot of meds at once.. I hope you get into the Dr. office early early today!!!

Yes, we alternate them at the hospital. Tylenol and Motrin. Look at the back and use the weight guide for dosage. Don't give more tylenol than it says. ANY liquid is a good thing when she's this warm. i.e. popsicles she'll lick, juice, etc. Sport drinks, not so good as they have large amounts of sugar in them, but pedialyte is great! And they make popsicles which some of our kids will take instead of drinking something. (Personally, I think it probably is because they take in small amounts at a time when eating popsicles instead of larger amounts when drinking liquid so their tummys don't get so irritated and upset). If they fever goes up past 104 I would be hiking her to the ER.

Awww Huge {{hugs}} to you both I hope Brook is feeling much better now
Glad you got that sorted out, we've had that before too, different names over here but same medicine, I think that they work in different ways and thats why its OK to use both together.
Take care Lorraine

Last week my daughter ran a fever from Monday night too Friday night. I could not get it to break, the lowest we could get it down to was 101. It got as high at 105.5. Funny thing is with that high of fever she never became the wet, floppy noodle like they usually get and she was still eating and drinking. She was just very clingy and grouchy. She just wanted to be held!! It was the strangest FLU bug I have seen.
Now my two oldest boys have it but Griffin has not ate or really drank anything since Friday. He's starting to turn gray and I'm getting really worried.
Oh....the reason for this post. Rotate every 2 hours -- this is according to my FIL (doctor) and friend (ER doc).

Well, now that we have the rotating of meds down pat I hope your daughter feels better soon. That high a fever I'd be inclined to say something viral and not teething. Russell fevers high but he doesn't ever have any other symptoms so I just rotate the meds and keep him comfy. I don't go to the doc unless something else beyond the fevers are going on. Ironically... Russell had a fever spike at 10pm last night! Out of the blue I tell ya! Sometimes Tylenol doesn't even budge them so I just go straight for the Motrin and bypass the Tylenol. Today he is ok! He has ALWAYS had mysterious fevers over the years.... Fevers are actually a good thing.... A.

A. is right about the fevers being a good thing. As long as you can keep the little ones a little happy, having the fever is the bodies way of slowing the kids down so they can heal themselves. Our docs don't treat the fever unless making the kids really miserable.

Yes at the same time and yes rotate there after.
The meds can be given at the same time to reduce a very high fever. Then you need to time out the following doses and switch to alternating doses.
Jonathan's fever was 105.3 in the ER and they gave him both Tylenol and Motrin at the same time. The fever went down.
After the fever was under better control the fever reducers were used separately. Motrin can cause an upset tummy. It sure does for Jonathan so he was given Motrin only once a day and Tylenol as needed.
Also the prescription dose of these meds is higher than the dose listed on the over the counter package. Talk to the doctor. Also remember that the infant liquid is more highly concentrated then the child's liquid. read the label and do the math for correct dosing. And one more warning, some cold meds already have a fever reducer in them. Again read the label.
