Laura has always been a really good sleeper, but lately she is waking between 4-5am and won't go back to sleep. She usually would go to bed at 8pm and sleep until around 6:30. This is about the same sleep pattern as Kathryn, so it has been perfect until now. Do you guys think your kids with DS need less sleep? I want to push back her bed time until 9, but she has been so tired by 7, it is all she can do to stay awake until 8. I should add that when she wakes so early, she mostly wants to sit and watch TV, so I think she is not getting enough sleep. She is less active and is eating less too. I am going to put her vaporizer on tonight and see if that helps. Anyone with simliar experience?

Damara's sleeping is changing right now too...she is up by 7am, she MUST take a afternoon nap or else we ALL pay! So she is not in bed at night till 10pm (new this summer), up at 7am and takes a 2 hour nap around 2-4....I have tried cutting out the nap or cutting it down, does not work for her, she is very tired and if I manage to put her to bed earlier, then she is still in need of a nap anyway.... So she is only getting about 11 hours sleep on average and is very good with that...But I think that between summer, no school, different routine and maybe age/stage, things are changing for them. I hope that when school starts, it might get back to normal...

Brook goes to sleep at 9:00 pm. Up inbtwn 1am and 4am everynight. She will go back to sleep pretty easy but only cuddled w/ momma. She's up at 7am on the nose. No alarm clock needed here ...LOL. I think this is just the way it will be forever She HAS to nap btwn 12:00 noon and 4 pm or she IS NOT a happy camper. And don't even think about interrupting her nap!!! She can be quite the little grouch for the rest of the night. {Yes, cute little Brookster CAN be a grouch... LOL } Good luck to you!!

Hmmm. Is she getting in her 6-yr molars? It could have to do with the extra light this time of year.
As for Stevie, she's a sleeper. She goes to bed at about 8-8:30 and gets up - usually - around 7. She naps for one to two hours in the afternoon (we shoot for 3 o'clock). Sometimes she wakes in the night, but she will go right back to sleep if I put her back in her bed. Every now and again she will go through a time of early waking (around 6) where she will come into my room & play nearby until I get up or crawl into bed with me.
I have noticed that sleep patterns seem to vary more by individual than by group - boys do not sleep better or worse than girls as a group; kids with Ds vary as much in sleep patterns as any other group.
I'd be more likely to look to teething or weather/sunlight reasons for the change in sleep. Find out what changed, or find some new way to get the sleep in. I'm sure you'll get it all worked out!
Best wishes!

Never thought about the molar thing, I am going to check her mouth when she gets home from school. We are in a heat wave here, but we do not go outside until after diner when it is cooler and they have AC at Laura's school (they don't take the kids out if it is really hot either).
I had read somewhere that people with Down syndrome sleep less. Didn't know if that was true and not sure where I heard it from, so I am not going to put too much merit into that one.
Hopefully this is a passing thing ... I do not do well on little sleep!

Lia goes to be between 9 and 10, due to the fact that putting her to bed earlier does No good. If she is really tired SHE will ask to go to bed early. Generally up early- unless she is supposed to get up early. Usually up by 7. She is 9. Restless sleeper. wakes up in the middle of the night. Nancy

Eric USED to be a great sleeper...11-12 hours per night. He usually goes to bed around 8 pm. and for the past few months will wake up at 5:30-6:00 AM. It doesn't matter if I let him go to bed later...still wakes up early. I thought this would be a faze, but unfortunetly he's settlling into a pattern. Thank goodness I'm a "morning" person, so I'm used to the early hours.

How much do your kids sleep? NOT enough!!! I can put Ashley(51/2) to bed at 7pm or 11:00pm and she is up at 4am. It about pushes me over the edge as she is really wired to go which means Mom has to get up and deal with her. I find her very difficult most days. I dread when the summer program end this Friday. they cut the month of August out because of funds. i wish I would have known I could have sent her to daycare or something for the remainder of the summer. They didn't let us know until we got our letter in the mail end of June. The head of our child study team is sneaky, mean and will do anything to save the district money to make himself look good. Thanks Tabernacle school district for helping me with my child!!!!

I've always needed more sleep than the usual child but, every child is different. I would become tired easily. I don't remember talking naps as an older child. Mom said that I needed more sleep than others for some reason.........Debbie

Nicholas generally sleeps from 8pm to around 7-7:30am. Has for about 2-3 years. We had to just stop any napping completely when he was little over 2. He really didn't need them, and if he did happen to fall asleep even for 15 min, he'd then be up until 2-3am and still get up at the same time the next morning! I wouldn't necessarily say that's a DS thing in his case, though, his brother was the same way.
