Cathy, no, Walmart does not accept Medicaid. I wish they did. We get one pair through Medicaid at the optical place in the hospital, then we purchase a second pair at Walmart. By the way, we got the girls' eyes examined yesterday. They both need glasses for schoolwork, mainly. So.......everybody in my house wears glasses. Everybody. All 7 of us. Sheesh.

Cody is on his second pair of glasses since he lost his others. He has kept them on no longer than 3 minutes and has left them in 3 different places. Suprised they haven't been stepped or sit on yet. Almost afraid to let him wear them at all! Actually he hasn't all week cause he won't keep them on. Will be sending him with it to school Monday, hopefully they will be coming home with him. hugs, Kristi

Kathleen, My husband is a manager at the Florence, KY Wal-Mart. I'm not sure if they have an eyeglass center there or not, but I can ask him if they do and to check and see if they have the bendable frames for your little one. I saw where your closest Wal-Mart is in Cincinnati so I assume you are in the Greater Cincinnati area. We live in Northern KY.

Hey NoahsMommy! Yes, I am in the greater Cincy area. I just went to the Walmart in Tri-County and they do have the bendables. Well, it was either that one, or the one on Ridge. One of them has them. They have some really nice frames too. Thanks.

I have read the recent messages here so far and I really respect you all for what you go through with your little ones! I didn't start wearing my glasses until was nine or ten years old. To be honest, I just don't remember much about those years. I have worn glasses most of my life. In high school I was always leaving my glasses at home or only wearing them for chalk board work. I think that is how my nearsightedness got worse. I have the nystigmus too but my glasses don't fully correct my vision because of the nystigmus. I am not sure if I am using the right word on that. My eyes move and I can't always focus them. I have a hard time keeping them on but I just tell myself that I can see a little bit better by wearing them. My world is slightly blurry without them. I finally found some glasses that feel comfortable (sometimes) and they aren't so big like my other one's were. What a pain they were! As for as children and adults who have Down syndrome wearing glasses I think that we are just like anyone else. We have a hard time getting used to new glasses and discomfort. I have known several who really needed their glasses to see and wore them all the time while working.

We had some black band with a tension thing in the back that one Ped eye doc gave us once... And also, Oshkosh makes a few frames with a strap already on it. We had a pair of those too!
Good luck. I would think the black band I am talking about with the tension strap (kind of like those colorful sports bands for sunglasses) would help.
Other than that.. I don't know...have you searched the web???

I am on this train too. I just got Jameson fitted for glasses. He is only +2 farsightedness. My problem was that only a few brands carried his size. He needs a 36 frame and most start at 40. So we had a very small selection. We got some Fisher Price ones but none of the bendy ones came smaller than 40 (like Tricia F his face is too small).
But I am kind of wondering about my optomotrists office where I got them cuz the lady had no idea when i asked her about that plastic bridge thing to put on the glasses. My insurance only pays for one set of frames for 2 years.
After listeneing to you guys, looks like I will be shopping in WalMart soon!! LOL. Thanks for all the advice. We get them next week. He is 2 1/2... what do you think the chances are in him keeping them on. Do you think that doing a "time-out" would be too harsh to keep them on?

Lord have Mercy Monique do you actually GET Jameson to stay in time out? You go girl!!! Ashlyn is 3 1/2...but she would think I had lost my mind if I put her in time out....I guess I need to work harder on her huh? She does some real mischievous sp? things...she really deserves time out...but I guess I never thought she would understand it yet!! She WILL NOT wear her glasses for longer than 10 minutes at a time and that is only recently! She used to only wear them for 30 seconds at a time....so we have come a long way!! I work on her for as long as she will tolerate them every day...and then I drop it...because she starts screaming/crying, and I am afraid that she will be totally against them and I will be losing this battle. I just don't know how else to handle this. So I am working on increasing the time little by little. Good luck to you!!

Well i saw this show where they took the kid and put him in an old high chair (which I still use for my 1 yr old but Jameson now sits in a booster chair). I put jameson in the high chair so he cant get out and have him face the wall for 2 minutes. I set the timer and when it goes off he is done. He hates it. I only had to do it like 6 times and now if i mention "time out" he stops right away. But i'll wait and see how I want to handle it with the glasses. You know some battles you have to choose. Monique

Hey if the highchair works....and he hates it...he just might keep his glasses on Monique! You can always try it. I wouldn't say that is too harsh! Harsh is spanking a child who won't wear their glasses, in my opinion. That is a great idea for timeout...I think I will use that on my wildman Mason (non DS) who has decided he will not be in timeout anymore...he says "I not in timeout". I love that idea!!!

oh you guys.. I am sooo excited... Katie is actually wearing those glasses now that I got the strap for her. She has no nose to hold them up.. but the strap seems to be working.
She must be realizing that she can see so much better with them on.. cuz.. we got about 7 hours with them on today!
Thanks for all your advice and encouragement!
Hugs,
Cathy
