well i'm actually hitting some roadblocks w/ local groups. they don't meet to very often. next one in december i'm still trying. the lady at the church called today, hopefully with good news, but i was at the volleyball game. i have a few parents in town really praying this can happen. if the church can't do it for liability reasons i know the Elks lodge will totally help me out. a bit outa town but not sooo far. i love them people. i'll keep ya informed Thx for asking I'm also doing some classes but i'll keep it hush for now untill i pass

Ok, just because other groups don't meet, that doesn't mean you can't!! I don't know how big your place is but you could always say, meet at your house and make it informal in the beginning to see how well received it is. You could start by making flyers and a list of maybe topics you'd like to address each month. Show your enthusiasm and others will follow Some months you won't get as many coming but I'd shoot for what YOU want, not for how well others are receiving the information right now. What other roadblocks you got? A.

Googsmom,
When our group started, we met at the local McDonalds playland. Some months the only people there were Amanda'a family and ours. That was o.k., we just kept coming. Now we have enough that we had to look for a new meeting place.
Check with your local RESD leader. Ours just volunteered to let us use one of the meeting rooms they have access to each month (it happens to be at a local golf course clubhouse) AND he is wanting our group to succeed so much that he is even having a snack provided for us with the bill sent to him!! Maybe your RESD program would love you just as much. If not, check with the local Intermediate School District... they are very helpful. Our physical therapist actually suggested calling the RESD guy, and then a speech therapist (who is in our group with her daughter) contacted him before I had the chance to and called me the same day! So, maybe you could get the same support.
Maybe this has all been mentioned. If so sorry, if not TRY IT! :-) I tried the local churches, they didn't offer much help, but like I said, the above people were very helpful.

That's great!!! We used to have ours at a local library and it's a great place to have meetings. We've since moved to a community center room that we pay for, but we needed to make the move.
Can't wait to hear how your first meeting goes!!

Please google in "Down syndrome Affiliates in Action." This is a website for Down syndrome parent groups to participate in an annual conference. The conference covers all kinds of topics relevant both to start-up groups like yours and well established groups with large budgets and staff.
If you look at the registration page, you will see that scholarships are available.
If you are thinking of saying you could never come to a meeting like this, think again. We will all post up about Robin and her wish to go to the National Convention!
