Elizabeth loved her Signing Times Videos. She would sit in her high chair while I did chores and watch them and clap. She loved her toys that made music, they were her favorites (therefore, we have many toys that make noise). Then, one day 2 weeks ago, put her in her high chair and turned on the dvd, and she started screaming like she was terrified and trying to turn around in the chair and get to me. Thought it was a fluke, but it has continued thru today. Will sit in her chair, no problem, but no dvd! Won't sit in her walker because the toys on the tray make noise. If she picks up a toy and it plays music or makes noise, she throws it down and starts to cry like she's afraid. My twins listen to music and watch videos and she doesn't get scared. And she doesn't get scared when I turn on her music CD. I'm totally confused as to what may be causing this. Anyone else ever have something like this happen? It wasn't gradual... happened all at once.

Aww, poor kid! Sorry I don't have any advice for you, just good thoughts that this will soon pass and once again she can enjoy signing time with Alex and Leah! (and Hopkins of course!)  |

No. Puzzling and worrisome. Ear infection? Hyperacusis? Tinnitus? Is she bothered by any and all loud noises or just doesn't like certain range of frequencies? Might be worth mentioning to her ped and getting her ears checked out, if you haven't done that lately.
Think I'd hope that it's just a temporary behavioral thing and not a red light from something bigger and badder. -- Big, bad Bod

Sorry to hear this, Damara goes in and out of interest and want for items. She will scream at the sound of her father laughing a hardy laugh...she will have issue with certain tones and loudness, however, we had her checked and they stated that this is behavioral and will change as time goes on.

Hi Sheryl,
What about other noises? If the tv is on and she is in another area does it bother her? Does she have issues with loud voices? Music? Trash truck noises? Just wondering.
I would track her sensitivity to see if it is only certain sounds or if it is all sounds in general. After you get some data, I think it would be a good idea to see her ped.

ohhhhhhhhhh yea...we do that
cept its with any EDUCATIONAL TOY! im telling you if it has ANYTHING TO DO with learning the alphabet...she TOSSES IT!
I just loan out all my leapfrog centipedes etc to the school for the year...we THOUGHT if everyone else would think they were cool...molly might too...

Hmmmm... I don't know Sheryl. Brook hated noises when she was little and now everything has to make a noise. (So she can dance.) {{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}

I dunno but that sure sounds odd especially because it involves noise. Have you called the ped to ask perhaps if they know? Does she get frequent ear infections? My guess would be an inner ear infection.AWWWW makes me sad give that girl a hug steff

Definitely have her ears checked. This may interest you: my oldest daughter, Mary, had an issue with some loud noises when she turned about 12. So we had her tested - the whole she-bang on hearing. Normal in all things - smack in the middle on every single test. The helpful part here is that she was both old enough & could express herself well enough to be able to tell me what was going on - unlike Elizabeth (it's a bummer when they can't tell us what's going on). Mary said that some sounds had just started making her ear drums "vibrate" (I know, that's how we hear...) - but it was a sort of rapid spasm of her ear drum - or they would feel "plugged". It was disturbing & gave her headaches. She says she still has this problem when there are "too many voices or noises in a room." She's learned to deal with it. If a toddler had this problem, it may well look like what you are getting with Elizabeth.

Elizabeth doesn't seem to have a problem with all noises, or with noises within a particular frequency range, mostly with just HER noises. Odd, I know. But our television doesn't bother her, soft or loud, our stereos, nope. Shouting (remember I have teenagers who would rather yell up the stairs for each other than walk up the stairs). Nothing. Only her videos and her toys. I just don't get it. She was just at the doctor 2 weeks ago (she has pneamonia again) and her ears looked healthy. She doesn't go to U of M again until Nov for hearing screen. Do you guys think I need to take her sooner?
