Reading has always been a strong point for Joy. She learned her letters at age 3, her letter sounds at 4 and by 5 was reading. We put her through kindergarten twice — mostly because she was such a young five the first time and we wanted her to have time to mature.
So at the end of kindergarten last spring, she was reading on a first grade level, although comprehension wasn't the best. That's something we're working on now.
The exciting thing is that I'm seeing great spelling skill emerge this year. In first grade they start doing weekly spelling tests ... really basic words with two to five letters. Joy has been doing great on her tests, and she's now even spelling words out loud instead of saying them. I find it especially nice when I see her start to spell something out loud, and then she'll pause to think about what letters to use — really sounding the words out. She does forget a lot of vowels, but that's pretty typical at this stage. I'm just so thankful reading and spelling seem to be strengths for her. I am a writer by profession and a voracious reader, so I'm thrilled to see these things emerging in Joy, as well.
Our kids can do anything they put their minds to. Don't ever let anyone tell you differently.

That is an inspiring post! Emily reads pretty well now and with comprehension, but it has been a life long learning advernture for her. I would keep up the good work...however you are doing it to make it work.
Em's spelling is attrocious...but its phonetic so we can understand it ....usually...LOL.
