Clarice was 4 going on 5 (October birthday) when she entered Kindergarten. We had fought it all the way. We ended up with an advocate and the district's lawyer. We were told that since the district didn't have the special day preschool and they had to pay someone else, they could force us to kindergarten because it was an affordable appropriate placement. Needless to say, they did give us all the other services...speech, OT, etc. that we justified. It turned out to be a good experience. At the end of the year we asked for her to repeat kindergarten they said she had learned to much to actually benefit from a whole year of repeating. She is now in 1st grade in a primary special day class. She is the youngest, but is doing very well and learning fast. They are individualizing the curriculum to her pace. She is doing well. The current plan is she will stay in that class through third grade. If we feel she is significantly behind then she can stay in another year. We were very concerned about her being so young, but it turned out to be a good academic challenge for her. We did not fight for mainstreaming because she has a real impulsive streak that would cause a lot of distractions in a "regular" classroom. We feel that she gets the best of both worlds...she's in her special day for academics then she has music and library with the regular first graders. She is also in the regular daycare at the school in the afternoons. Kristin
