Ok....talk about weird holiday plans....Marnie is not finding a way to make it home from DC for Christmas...BUT she CAN get to Vegas she finds...so...LOL...suggested maybe we meet her there. Has anyone ever spent Christmas there...is it totally deserted and depressing...or what? Em would of course think she had died and gone to heaven...I would probably think of it as a National Lampoon Family Christmas of sorts...LOL. No chimney for Santa...and I guess for Christmas dinner...there is always a.....Buffet......................

Jackie, you are a VERY creative person. I bet Santa could make his way to LV NO PROB!!!! I think a change, whether wanted or not, could be fun! It's COLDER in the winter at night in the desert, so maybe Santa might me hiding in the wings somewhere.. at the craps table, behind the slots.... LOLOL
Well, if you do go... have fun!

The only thing missing might be Marnie if we do this....just wish it wasnt so durn far from DC and so hard to get to Amarillo......

Jackie, I haven't seen the movie "Christmas with the Cranks" yet, but I kept thinking about it when I saw your post. The book is based on the novel "Skipping Christmas" by John Grisham, and I read it at Christmastime last year. It was a hoot! Part of kids growing up is them branching out and doing new (although sometimes admittedly WEIRD) things. I have to admit that as hard as it would be for me to spend a Christmas without my oldest (Nicholas), I don't think I would go to Vegas to spend Christmas with him. Moms tend to be the keeper of the traditions, and I would probably stay put and do what we always do, believing that those traditions are important to him, and knowing that he will eventually come back to them. Am I making any sense at all? LOL. I am admittedly very root-bound though, and Christmas is my favorite season of the year. My house is decorated from one end to the other, my bedroom literally has matching Christmas curtains and bedspread, and I replace many of the pictures on the wall with Christmas pictures! So, you're probably getting the picture here, literally. In the Grisham book, the daughter decides not to come home for Christmas, so the parents decide to skip Christmas and go somewhere warm. At the very last moment, the daughter decides to come home, and they have to scramble around putting together the kind of Christmas she has come to depend upon. The book was really good, and I think the movie is going to be a hoot. I can't wait to see it, and I am NOT a movie goer. (Can't stand to sit still that long) P.S. If you need to do something totally aimless, I love the Sony website for the movie, and was temporarily addicted to the game "Free Frosty". The site address is: www.sonypictures.com/movies/christmaswiththekranks/ Then go to games, and then Free Frosty. I managed to get him free, but it took me more than a few tries!

Yes...I too am pretty traditional...I always said...the only way you can get me out of my house at Christmas...is...toes up!!!!! But a few years ago...we started leaving and going to visit kids....grandkids DO change the picture....and then it got so that I didnt even drag out the tree and decorations...just got a few of my pieces from my many years creche collections out...and bought tons of pointsettias to decorate with....and nice thing was...in January not much to put away!!!! But the Grinch has found a new abode and this year I want to celebrate in style!Today ...alas...bummer....Marnie phoned and said not to look for any more tickets...she is staying in DC and planning a cruise for two weeks later... so...for the first time in my entire life...I will be spending Christmas with just two other people....but people who mean more to me than just about anything....so thats ok.....My sister will have her whole family here like I will have mine at Thanksgiving...so maybe we will just invite ourselves to their celebrations.... My very favorite Christmases...(aside from last years adventure at The Toenail Moon ;D)...were in Germany...especially our trips to the Christkindl Markt every year in Nurenburg....just like being inside of a real live snow shaker...with the snow gently falling...gluewein....wurst....red striped vendors tents filled with gorgeous glass ornaments in the marktplatz...and the oompah bands playing carols on the steps of the cathederal. If Ed liked Vegas as much as Em and I do...I would still consider it.....but will most likely end up here nice and cozy by our fire...and no doubt up to our eyeballs in Texas snow. Jackie

Laura, I am just laughing over your post about the Grisham book, "Skipping Christmas". We just read it for our book group and lol it inspiried a great therapy session over what Christmas does NOT mean to us (altho I think we would like to have someone as creative as you come and decorate for us!! So thanks for the web link to the movie (we are going to go see it as a group) altho I STILL haven't freed Frosty YET!

If any of you are into "too much Christmas"...then read the book...Simplify Your Christmas.......it will change your whole season...for the better...I still havent finished the book...but have read enough to have given up my mega card sending...What a headache that had turned into...rather than a pleasure...and frankly we get very few nowdays anyhow....
Its so easy to spoil the season with 'overkill'.....but its still a time of year that infuses me with what I need . Jackie

Whew! I've been out of town working for a few days and I missed you guys! LOL.
I was re-reading my post wondering what made you laugh, Debu! And after reading it I have to admit that my addiction to the "Free Frosty" game may not be all that temporary.....ROTFL! In fact, I'm wondering how long the website will be up, because let's face it, I'm sure they won't leave it up forever, and then what will I do for my Free Frosty fix?
Jackie, thanks for the recommendation about the book for simplifying your Christmas, but to be honest, I like mine just the way it is! Some of us thrive on chaos, I guess. I love all the decorating and baking and stuff, I guess it's just part of what makes Christmas so fun for me! (Sick, isn't it?)

No...LOL...its not sick....I love chaos too....still have chaos....and with the kids mostly gone...not enough really.... But....what I learned from the book was how to eliminate the chaos that drove me... nuts...woke me up at night..stressed me out. For years we sent Christmas letters...never caring whether others wanted to read them or not...cuz we LOVED getting one from eveyone else. We have lived so many different places and what with our time in med school and the military ...had friends scatterd to the far corners....but started realizing how many of them were coming back....how many we werent getting....so finally decided instead of stressing over it...trying to be more clever than the year before.....staying up nights on end putting the durn thing together...that email for those whose addys we have would suffice. Also my gift situation was getting out of hand....so I pared it down a bit....still doing shopping...hanging out at Toys r Us....but writing a few more...checks...gift cards...etc. While I do this FOR others ....I still do it to please ME... ;D But...this year...boo hoo ....will be really different. Just Ed and Em and me.....the smallest Christmas we have ever had.... Probably time for some new traditions....no one to jingle the bells for late at nite...probably no putting out cookies and milk....(notice I said 'probably' )..so will have to put on my thinking cap. I also realized I didnt need to have as many Christmas gatherings....and now just try to have my friends over ....once...and really make it nice......But....this is just MY take on what needed to be done for ME to keep the season fun and meaningful. I think everyone has to do what makes it a special time of year for them. Jackie
