I moved from Tennessee to Alabama last December and I have found that services in Alabama are horrible. Alabama Medicade will not pay for diapers unless your child can not walk and they will not pay for nutrition supplements unless your child is tube fed.
I don't understand how states can vary so much in the services they provide for families of children with special needs.
There was a lawsuit for school districts because rural area schools didn't receive the funding that schools in the city did. There was a supreme court ruling that every child should be entitled to the same level of education regardless of where they lived and extra money was awarded to the schools in small towns. I wonder is there any way to pursue a claim against a state like Alabama that would raise their level of services up to meet that of other states.
There is a world of difference living here. I am to the point of moving back to Tennessee which I would really hate to do because of the situation I have here for my younger two boys.
I feel so pulled between what's best for Kaden and whats best for my family as a whole.

Radonna I think that is actually normal. When we lived in California the services for Lauren were amazing. The special education was pretty darn good. We moved to Texas and I can't get anything done for Lauren and there is like a 16 year wait list for services from MHMR here. I have literally fought the school to get anything done here. I am sorry you are having these issues. It would be amazing if the entire country was on the same line with all the services.

A, Tennessee just got the same program put in place as Florida and California so just as I left it got better. They still did TONS more than alabama before they changed.
Renee the waiting list here is that long too! In Tennessee they are suppose to have everyone off the waiting list and receiving services by July of 09.
CC. It's good to "see" you!!!

Oh if only it was that easy!! I sold a perfectly great house to come here and bought an okay house here. That was before the housing market went to crap! I would have to sell this house for what I have in it. Don't really think it's possible.
what I really want to do is find out how to change the law. Could someone sue their state. Not for money but for the same rights?

Sure.. I don't see why not... you'd need Gloria Alred (sp?) or someone like that! LOL ;D
Unfortunately sometimes we have to move closer to the Urban or bigger cities to get services.
So did the medicaid people tell you if you have a script from your doctor for diapers you can't get it because your child walks? What about medical necessity. I have never heard of medicaid not giving diapers in any state... IF there is a script written.. that is truly sad!!

Radonna, you can sue who ever you want in this country BUT it will cost you lots unless you win and include the cost of your lawyer and such in the law suit.
Just wondering, if you don't mind me asking, did they put that in writing that they would only pay for the reasons you said. Sounds so WRONG to me.

Radonna... First off...so nice to see you!! Not sure if you'll remember me and Erin....but I sure remember you & Kaden !! Not sure how to answer your post....but.....made me think of the current "Obama" post going on right now....people are terrified of "socialsim", but at least we'd have equitable services. You'll have to post an update on you and the boys....can't wait to hear what you are up to now.

I do have it in writing it's a whole booklet under covered services for Alabama Medicade. They want me to do something called bowel management because he can walk and for anyone unsure about what that is google it!! It is soooooo not something I want to try. Kaden is loosing weight too because he needs nutrional supplements. He was on five a day in Tn all covered by his Medicade. Here they said he has to be tube fed before they will pay for it. Well Kaden would die if they stuck a tube in him. I have no doubt that if it ever come down to tube feeding him that it would just be the end. He can't even wear glasses because of his sensory issues I'm sure he'd have the tube pulled out. I buy as much as I can. He's still lost about seven pounds since we've moved here. On a child that is only 50 some pounds thats a huge deal. I don't understand if he can and will drink it why they'd want him to have a major surgery.
Allisa I do remember you!! I'll post some pictures and stuff of the boys as soon as I get a few uploaded on photobuckets

Radonna ~ Not that this helps you BUT I get what you are saying. So much makes NOOO sense. My Chris had certain heart issues and we I can say are lucky to have a first class health insurance policy. With that said our insurance policy would NOT cover a correction of Christopher's heart problem as the only Doc that could do it was out of our area. K, that being said, they were more then willing to pay for us to bring him to the ER every week or every other week and pay for those services for the rest of his life BUT NOT pay for the correction. In the end the correction saved them TONS of money BUT NOPE they would not pay for If I read your post right, your insurance would rather pay for a surgery that would not only cost lots but put your son at risk rather then pay for some diapers I have no idea what the answer really is BUT Man the insurance stuff going on here in this GREAT country is just handling things WRONG Is it possible another organization out there like the Elks, Lions Club, ARC, ... could help you with this?? Just a thought CC ~
