Lisa, you could almost have been describing Joshua, except that he doesn't know colors yet. I have just recently started referring to things as "your red shirt" and so forth, so I blame myself for that. He hasn't had enough exposure to color concepts. I'm remedying that now!
He loves to throw things and knock things off tables. He tries to hit at people, but we put on our sad face and sign "gentle" for him and he's getting the idea. He hits us GENTLY now! LOL! He used to yank people's glasses off their faces, and we broke him of that by putting on our sad face. He does empathize with people. He always cries when one of his siblings cries.
I have paid a lot of attention to autism "signs" lately, and I think I've realized something about Joshua. Although he is content to dangle toys and open and shut doors, that is definitely not his PREFERRED play. If he is doing those types of things and one of us walks into the room, he hops up and comes over for a hug. If we offer to dance with him or read him a book, he's all for it. He is definitely a people person.
Joshua loves toys that "do things" when you push a button, too. He also likes swings and slides. He has the master bedroom in our house, so there's room for a variety of Fisher Price climbers and such. He enjoys that kind of active play.
Your description of Danny's speech sounds like Joshua. Joshua almost always signs in conjunction with speaking, which makes it easier for us to understand him. The poor speech and the lousy signing TOGETHER make it easier to understand what he means.
Joshie is a REALLY good sleeper . . . sleeps about ten hours at night and takes a three hour nap after lunch. He also is a good eater, with no texture/temperature issues. He eats whatever I put in front of him, but as soon as he's full, he starts tossing it on the floor.
Thanks for describing your son. It's interesting to compare notes. Gosh, he's cute!
