My dad had a stroke at 64 - knocked out his left side pretty much, but he got most of it back over about a year's worth of therapy. He was never much of a typist before, but now he's very slow. He talks and walks mostly normally. His left arm is a bit weak and he is way more emotionally affected by things nowadays. He's also more nostalgic. Still, I thought I was losing my dad, so this "kinder, gentler" version is tops in my book Praying for you and your dad! Chris too

Sending prayers Jessie, so sorry to hear this. I'm familiar because my grandmother had one 3 years ago, she's 93. My heart goes out to you and your family and your dad, nothing can be this difficult, and esp this time of year...I pray he recovers well and knows he has so many people here too praying for him. I hope you can update how he's doing, and you too. Sending lots of prayers.

Praying your dad is on his way to recovery.......My daughter Kathleen had several strokes at 5 yrs old,she lost all use of her left side and some use of her right.Since then,I've come to know more stroke victims than you can imagine. It has shown me that if you can keep a positive attitude, and are surrounded by caring people, anything is possible. The road can be long and slow but it's worth the struggle.Helping the patient feel "whole", respected. and in control of their care as much as possible is very important.(((HUGS)))) Mary G.

THANK YOU EVERYONE for your kind words, thoughts and prayers. These last two weeks have been rough to say the least. The first couple of days we weren't even sure he was going to make it. Fast forward to today and he is in the inpatient rehabiliation unit!! Yee haa! He does have a long road of rehab in front of him, but I think he's determined to do what it takes to get back home and get back to his life, which was so rudely interrupted by this stroke. He has been a high risk candidate for a stroke for a long time, we've known that, but to actually have it happen, well you just really can't prepare for that. Because of all of his health issues they have had a tough time getting his BP under control, his sugar stabilized, etc. The stroke was considered massive and damaged a good portion of the left side of his brain. He also had a small one on the right side, but that doesn't appear to be affecting anything. He still has a small bleed as well as a small aneurysm. The stroke most likely stemmed from atril fibrilation (sp?). He's still looking at a possible procedure on the aneurysm, a stent in his cartoid artery as well as a pacemaker. He's a mess! It's actually quite amazing how well he is doing considering the trauma that his body has been through as well as his on-going chronic conditions. He's also a long-time smoker. He quit 20 years ago when he had a heart attack, only to take up cigars about 10 years ago. He just wouldn't give the d**n things up! What was really sad was the first few days when he was barely 'with it', he would put his left hand up to his mouth as if he were smoking. That just tells you how strong of an addiction it is. But, I think I can safely say that's the only smoking he's ever going to do again! Again, thanks for keeping us in your thoughts. Jessie
