I know this doesn't belong in this section but i need some help here. Brook has been sick for over a month. First they said she had a double ear infection and a sinus infection and sent us home w/ 2 giant jugs of amox. Not better. Back to the doc and put on a high powered antibotic and still nothing, Have a call into the doc now but i'm really thinking about hauling her into the ER. She is freeking me out. She is not reallly having trubbles breathing b/c i'm constantly sucking her boogers out but her chest sounds just HORRIBLE!!!! All crackily and just awful. She is wheezy and just miserable. What to do? I looked up RSV and everything fits except she is drinking and eating a little bit. Uggggg

I know my son had it when he was 3 months old and it was awful. It was exactly what you described from the chest, he sounded awful. Can you get into your dr. again today? If her chest sounds crackily that is not a good thing. Has she been nebulized to try and break some of that stuff up? Good luck, let us know how you make out. I would personally take her somewhere.

John was in the hospital at 2 weeks with RSV. Got it from the cancer center. RSV can be diagnosed throught bloodwork. Have you Dr. check it . I know the younger you are the more likely they will be hospitalized. It is a virus. Antibiotics will not help. Brook may be able to fight it off since she is older. The only thing they could do for John is what you are doing. Suction, they had to go deep and suction him. Check her cuticals. John's were purple, due to lack of oxygen. They did have him on a decongestant drop also. If this is what it is, the doc says John will get it every year, but will be able to fight it the older he gets. I keep him so sanitized its scary. Good luck-- and Hugs to you and yours.

If you haven't already, read Dr. Len www.ds-health.com/rsv.htmCharlie had two bouts of RSV in his second year. Thank God he didn't have it in his first year. Then he went on Synagis, pricey shots, and we stopped camping out in hospitals under oxygen tents while getting fluids and Xopenex. Any signs of respiratory distress, I'd be on my way to the ER. And I'd be more comfortable if somebody would check Brook's oxygenation level, stick a pusle ox on her and see what her O2 sats are. Hope she's better soon. -- Bob

My guess is she is too old for RSV.....but I could be wrong.... Erin also got Cynagist ( sp ??) shots to protect against RSV....peditrician petioned our insurance to have it covered due to her heart defect......and she had them until she turned 2 & we were told that the "risk" was much smaller at that age..... Not to make light of all the congestion....but.....I recall thinking that Erin must have had 50 pounds of mucous in her teeny tiny nasal passages because MAN OH MAN could she get congested !! It was always much worse in Erin than in her brothers. I hope she feels better soon !!

Oh my!!! I'm so sorry to hear how sick little Brooke is. If you can't get her into the Dr. today, I would totally bring her into the ER if she is having a hard time breathing. ...Remember you know her better than anyone else and if you think she needs to be seen, then she does!!!!
Let us know how she is doing...did you try the shower on very hot and just sitting in the Bathroom with steam? Just a thought...

Also about the shower thing...they make sudafed shower tabs, that desolve with the hot water and create a steam sudfed nasal clearing ....I use this when I am stuffy and it works for a little while.

Did they do a chest x-ray? They can do a pulse oximeter at your Doc's office (if they have one). I would insist on both these things. Also, is anyone else sick at home? The flu is a nasty respiratory virus that won't respond to antibiotics. At my old pediatric office we were able to do a nasal swab to check for the flu virus. Maybe your doc has the same. I know Eric got the synergist shots for 2 years straight for RSV. My Grandaughter, Addison, also had RSV twice in her first two years. Her symptoms sound very much like Brookes. I'd ask to be checked for this...she's a bit older, but thats not to say she can't have it.

Thank you everyone. We have tried the cool mist, hot steam shower, vicks, booger sucking, everything. Her reg doc called last night. Wants to see her first thing this am. Going to do the nose swab thing and check her oxygen. If Dr Tami wants a chest xray then we will do that. We also are headed to Doernbeckers for the Ds clinic. Dr T called them yesterday to make sure we saw an ENT and to have them check her out too. They have a super dooper booger sucker there I guess. Dr Tami is hoping maybe that will get the mucus going. Brook got denied for the RSV shot b/c the Medicade says she has been too healthy for her short 2 1/2 yrs. I said I would pay for it and they replied w/ they don't take $ from people on medicade. Oh good grief. So here we go for an alllll day appt. Hopefully they can tell me she is just SUPER DOOPER congested and they will suck all the boogers out that are stuck so far down. Thanks again for thinking of the Brookster. I just want her better and not to sound like a freight train when she coughs and breaths. Oh and the fever thing. She feels burning up to the touch but has a somewhat normal temp. Go figure..... off to the docs now.

Miss Brookster is too precious to have to go through this. I hope you get to the bottom of this soon. As one poster mentioned, have you had an O2 monitor put on her yet?
Please keep us updated.

What a LONG day. Brook is VERY sick. Doesn't show it though so she stummped us again. What a trooper. Went to the doc first thing. Did RSV swab, checked her oxygen. Ox is ok. Left to get xrays before RSV swab was done being looked at. Xrays sucked!!! Brook hates it. Finally 1/2 a box of tissues and 5 xrays later they finally got one they could look at. 2 big men and 1 momma couldn't hold this girl still enuf...LOL. Find out results probally Monday. Dr Tami called hubby as she knew my cell died and told him Brook is very sick. Didn't say it was RSV, he can't remember anyway, he said he stopped listening after Dr said very sick. Severe sinus infection and now a throat infection. Oh lovely OMG the $$$$ I just forked out for the perscription of nose squirt stuff, Veramist, and Augmentin for 20 days. Yep from the same darn insurance who said they won't/can't take $ from people on medicade just got me for $444.00. Yikes!!! Hopefully this will do the trick. She seems in good spirits. Had a great day at the Ds clinic (another post there) and is snuggly in her jammies getting ready for bed. Thanks for all the wishes and advise. I'm just now entering the world of Brooker getting sick. It sucks I might say
