We have had such a sad, sad weekend. Friday night we had to lay Toby, "B" as Jason has always called him, to rest. He was 15 years old, losing his eyesight and hearing. Brian and I have been having the dreaded discussions about when would be the right time to put him down. Well, the decision came on Friday night. He was his normal self during the day but that afternoon, soon after Jason got home, Brian noticed he was lying down in the dining room kind of leaning against the china cabinet. He tried to get him to move and he wouldn't. When Brian picked him up he had a b.m. and continued to lose that control as well as his breathing was very labored. We took Jason with us to the vet's office because we wanted to make sure that he understood that Toby was gone. He cried, we cried, it was pretty much awful. He hasn't cried since that night, but the last two nights he has laid in his bed cuddled up with a stuffed animal that's about the size of Toby. This truly was the best dog we could have asked for. We have always said he was a special gift from God just for Jason and there is a special place in heaven waiting for him. Jason's had him his entire life, so adjusting to life without "B" is going to take some time. Very sad . . . ever go through those periods of your life when you just think, dang - enough! I'm tired of crying!!! Jessie

Oh my, poor Jason! I"m sooo, so sorry Jessie! Pets get to be part of our family, and especially when someone is challenged verbally, it must be the ultimate comfort to have a canine friend who has no need of words from you.
We had a cat that lived for seventeen years, we'd had him since Nick was two, so he had a really hard time when we had to put the cat to sleep after he suffered a stroke. He'd had that cat his whole darn life, through several moves and many life changes. Certain special animals just become part of the landscape of your life.
I'm so sad for Jason, and for you and Brian who have to stand by and watch his heartache but can't fix it for him. Those are the worst things. Your post made me cry. HUGS, my friend, Laura

Awwwwwwwww Jessie, I'm so sorry. It hasn't been that long since we lost our dog, and we only had her for 5 years. We would have loved her more and more every year. So, I know it has to be very very hard on all of you. Hugs to your whole family.

Our hearts go out to you all.
We have only had our puppy since the first of November, it amazes me how quickly she has become an important part of our family.

Oh Jessie...bummer...Love and Loss just seem to go with having pets. I hope Jason gets over it sooner than later but...I think you did the right thing in helping him realize it was final.
Guess next step will be to buy another pup to replace the stuffed animal. Please keep us tuned in and I really am sorry for all of you.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I know how heartbreaking it is to lose a cherished pet. They are family members, and they leave a huge hole in the family. I don't know if you have ever read Rainbow Bridge or not, but if you google it, you'll find it. Every time I read it, I bawl like a baby, but it makes me feel good to think my furbabies have a place of peace where they go.
