three weeks ago they called my wife at work and told her that victoria was coughing, and had weepy eyes, and since wooping cough was going around they wanted her to come get tori, so wife left work, but i guess it wasnt fast enough for them they also called my wifes mother and asked her to get tori, when my wife arrived at the school victoria was already gone.
victoria coughed twice that day and twice more the next day i saw one clear tear come out of her eye. one period. because of congestive heart disease victoria always has some congestion and ........ well her eyes will weep sometimes ..... i think its because ......... well she has down syndrome duh...... this week they called my wife and called her to get victoria because they said she had uncontrolled diareah (sic) she never messed herself but i think she kept asking to go to the toilet, maybe she just wanted to fool around because when she got home she had a normal stool, not even sorta loose, i dont know whats going on at the school , her teacher always hides when i bring victoria because we had a fight because i refused to sign the iep unless all the iep team members came to the meeting... she told my wife if we didnt sign it victoria couldnt go to school there,, now she hides from me and im beginning to wonder if she s pullin this crap to get even... it costs us over a hundred dollars everytime my wife leaves work and its getting kinda tiresome.

Sorry, I have no advise to offer but we have the same problem with our school nurse. Sarah has blocked tear ducts and we have antibiotic drops for her eyes when they get really gunky. I have a letter from her specialist, an occular plastics surgeon, saying her eyes are frequently gooey and her eyes tear because of her blocked tear ducts. That school nurse makes me pick Sarah up EVERYTIME her eyes look bad. I'm a teacher so it isn't so easy just to up and leave. I just wanted you to know that you aren't alone. Chris

Cassie was sent home from preschool (three years ago) at least once a week because of excess snot and/or "possible" pinkeye. I had her doctor write a note that said Cassie was not to be sent home unless she had a fever along with the snot. Once, when I said I wouldn't come to get her, they called my mom (who works in the same school system) to get her. But after that, they kept her at school unless she had a fever. We've changed school systems since then, but I brought another note from the doctor, and talked to the school nurse on the first day, and explained that when Cassie has snot and gooey eyes, she'll stay at school. Our new issue this year is that whenever Cassie falls asleep or seems "tired", they call me to get her. They don't send my other daughter home for being tired! I think she's just tired of whatever they're working on, 'cause she's just fine after I pick her up! So, I'm in the same boat too.
Good luck! Donnita

Our problem was with an over-reactive daycare worker...but same issue. I used to use doctors note, then I found out that the school nurses can write a health alert notice that goes to everyone that deals with my daughter. It describes some of the medical issues that can be associated with Down Syndrome such as the higher incidence of respiratory problems. It then goes into specific health issues such as the gooey eyes. It lists symptoms, and how I want it handled. All of this was run through with a letter from our pediatrician (which I wrote for the doctor at her request), that stated specific symptoms and how they were to be treated. I've had fewer issues since, because I usually remind them to check the health alert first. The health alert is reviewed annually and is updated as needed.
By the way, my other daughter (non-DS) also has a health alert due to her food sensitivities, so it is not just for kids with disabilities.

No advice here either as we are going through the same thing. Except with Justin he has behavior issues-ADHD or PDD NOS still working on that one. The school will call 3-4 times a week to come get him their reasons vary from throwing up to severe poos. Pick him up and he's fine nothing the whole entire time. They just don't feel like dealing with him so they call and say he's sick. Fortunately I'm not working but then again who will keep me on when I have to keep going and picking him up. I would make them keep him there unless he has a fever but I'm not too crazy about his teacher this year-old school marm right down to the old shiny gold, black polished wood handle school bell setting right in front of her desk. We too have had Doctors notes detailing side effects of the wonderful meds he's on, because they called so much for diarrhea I took him to a pediatric gastro doc, ran all the tests and guess what not nothing grrrrrrrr. These are trained professionals so why does it take us parents to tell them what to do, Justin has issues with the commotion during passing time, they don't know what to do had to tell them try head phones, took in his mp3 player, duh worked like a charm. Had to pick him up from school at the end of day he refused to get on the bus and between 6 trained adults they couldn't get him on the bus plus they said he was very argumentative ummmmm duh again he was trying to tell them he can't get on the bus without his harness on, their response oh we didn't see it in there open the back pack and there it is grrrrrr. Oh I could go on and on

Just wanted to say I can sympathize. Our problem is reflux. So if he ever has a cold and gets a little phlegm in the back of his throat, triggers the reflux and he may have a little upchuck. And of course you're not supposed to stay at school if you throw up! I used to occasionally get calls to pick him up too.
Like some of the others said, I got a note from his doctor explaining his reflux and that he didn't need to be sent home for this. I realize sometimes with our kids' speech impairments it's hard to tell for sure what's going on with them sometimes. But I just keep thinking if they are with the same teacher or aid for a little while, even after just a few weeks in a new school year, they should be around them enough to know if they are truly acting sick or not. Kinda frustrating sometimes.

Carolyn he's still at Webster in Livonia grrrrrrrrrrr. As for me just found out have bilateral carpal tunnel, torn rotator cuff r shoulder and 4 smaller tears in left and a cyst or something inside the muscle of right shoulder, but other than that I'm doing just dandy lol. The girls have been talking and I think it's great lys really misses Elizabeth. LOL yours won't talk and mine won't stop unless she's sleeping and even then sometimes she talks in her sleep lol. As for Justin we are redoing Behavioral Plan and now finally they listened and have him go into a more self contained classroom with one of the 6th graders and they do his work which he just loves. His school is for the cognitively impaired and the academically gifted so he's paired up with one of the kids. I keep trying to tell them he is more comfortable and use to working with typical kids and the responds better but hey I'm just mom what do I know Well have to scoot have a meeting at Lys' school. Talk to you soon
