The kids are at school, so I had a few minutes to introduce my family. We have 4 children. Yes David and I have done our quota for population. ;DRon,26 a musician and restaurant manager in Ottawa, Francois,21 college student in Conselling for Youth Worker, Savannah,6 the queen of this household and Adam, 5 born with DS. We knew before he was born that he had DS, did not change our opinion. I believe in public awareness, so I wrote a poem which was published, a book called No Sugar Coating which I hope to publish soon, I also give elementary school presentations for grade 7-8 on the subject.I hope to expand and do more schools next fall. I have done 11 schools last year from our district, but the budget is getting tighter. It is all done on a volunteer part. Never want to teach this age group. I am also on the Board of Director for our local Communitty Living and on the Board of Education for special education. We have learned lots more from Adam then we have actually though him. All my children were gifts from God and are treated as so. We are from a small communitty of 5000 from Northern, Ontario where Adam is the only DS child. So education is important for us and him. Getting the services needed are sometimes a battle as they have to travel 1 and 1/2 hour to our town. But a fighter I am and he does get the services needed. The best attitude is not to take NO for an answer. Talk to you all next time. Glad to have found this board.

Our 7 year old daughter Savannah had the surgery on both eyes 2 years ago. All went well. The frist and 3rd day were the worst and she hated the drops. If you wish send me an e-mail at my personal e-mail address and I will send you a picture of before and after. It was well worth it. She also patched for 2 years. Now she has to wear glasses.

Adam had to be put to sleep to extract 4 teeth. He has a double set of teeth on the top. Well he had 3 surgeries before the age of 2 before and had gone in distress but the doctors at the time figured it was because of other complications like: tracheal stenosis, pneumonia and so on. He is now 6 and in great health. Well it turns out that he has a really bad reaction to Sevo Flurane (meds put in the mask before they put him to sleep) :oThe anestiologist said his heart rate dropped drastically and because they usually wait after they are asleep to put an IV in they couldn't get the drug to conteract the reaction fast enough. He was in the OR for 3 hours when it should have takin 20 minutes. We we're so afraid. From now on, I think they will hold him down for the IV's if need be. I am so terrified of him needing any surgery again. Just wondering if anyone has had that problem with their child. When he was small we expected complication, but not this time. So it was a real shocker. Glad it turned out Ok but will sure be thinking about this for a long time.

Adm is also crossed eye, ven though it doesn't show much when he wears his glasses. My daughter Savannah (not DS) got surgery for her crossed eyes. It went well but she will still have glasses for the rest of her life. Make sure you see a good optometrist before making the decision. The measurements were a pain in the butt as we had to travel 10 hours aways for a 10 minute appointment 5 times in one year before the surgery. But the surgery itself wasn't bad at all. She just hated the drops you have to put in her eyes for at least 2 weeks. If you wish e-mail me at my personal address and I will send you a picture of Savannah before and after. Quite the difference.

Actually Bedky you were a lot of help. You just reminded me that at his last dentist visit the dentist did say that it looked like his molar we're cutting through. Thanks!

Adam 6 had a bad fever a few months ago due to a bad cold. So like every mother does, I gave him meds, kept him home from school and of course would put my hand on his forehead almost 10 times a day to check for fever. ;D Well he caught on to that in a minute. ;D When he wants attention now, he puts his own hand on his forehead and puts a pout on (like faking he is sick) ;D our problem is that in the last few weeks he has been having fevers on and off for no apparent reasons, he will put his hand on his forehead or take your hand and make you check and says "ouch!" I saw his pediatrician who seems to think that because the fever goes away it is nothing to worry about. Well I demanded blood work done and am still waiting for the results. The doctor suggested that he may be having migraines. I have had migraines since I was 12 years old, but never had a fever with them. All my other 3 children (not DS) had fevers, but there was always a reason for it, and the same for Adam. These last few weeks there doesn't seem to be a reason. Some days he is fine in the morning and by early afternoon he will have a fever over 39 sometimes. Yesterday he was fine all day and this morning when I got him up he was so hot to the touch when I grabbed his hand I check his temperature, it was 39.8. He still had a fever (39.5) before I put him to bed tonight. He has been taking Motrin and tylenol like it is going out of style. Again he doesn't seem to have a cold or anything. His ears were also checked and nothing is wrong. Just wanted to know if any of your children ever had fevers that could not be explained. I'm sure there has to be a reason for the fevers, but finding out why seems to be difficult. Any advice would be appreciated. Claire
