Alison is only in second grade but this is an issue I've been thinking about already! Here in NY, my understanding is there are three levels of diplomas - Regents diploma where students take exams in the core subjects that are from the state. Then there is a local diploma where the kids have to pass their core subjects but don't take the state Regents exam - being a parent rep on our districts CSE it seems that most kids with IEPs get this type of diploma. Lastly there is an IEP diploma for kids who are not able to take the "regular" curriculum classes but have met their specific IEP goals.
Not sure yet where Alison will fall in this three tiered system but we'll set our sights on a Regents diploma for now! Who knows what will happen in the next ten years or so!
I wish you and Haley much success in the effort to get that diploma and achieving her goal of going to college!

Sounds like you learned alot about Emily's condition, that's great.
We'll be praying that this combination of meds is successful for Emily!
Hugs!

PS...... I feel your Justin Beiber pain! Alison is obsessed with his music, me not so much! LOL

Hi Jodi,
Both Alison and I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Mine was confirmed by a needle biopsy of the thyroid along with bloodwork. Alison's was discovered when she was about a year old when having some routine bloodwork. She didn't start meds until she was about 18 months old. She takes Synthroid everyday, as do I. She's been on the same dose for about 4 years or so and we get bloodwork every six months. Me on the other hand.... not quite so stable as far as dosage goes for the synthroid! I seem to bounce between 2 different levels about every year or so. I've had it since shortly after having my oldest daughter who turned 20 last week.
Alison is great about taking the Synthroid - it's a very small tablet and she just swallows it down dry! Not me - I have to have something to drink with any pills!
I just think that of all the things that our kids with DS are more prone to having, this is a pretty easy to manage thing! Good luck!

Thanks for posting about this Laura! Since Cleveland is so close I am 95% sure I will be going..... I also just sent an e-mail to Alison's SpEd teacher with a link to the conference info. I too have heard that their conference are an excellent source of information.
Maybe we'll get to see each other again?!?

We took Alison's older sister Sarah to her Tae Kwon Do class this morning. There was a "new" black belt in class who looked so familiar to me but I just couldn't quite place him. Turns out it was Sujeet Desai!!! It was funny because he kept looking and smiling at Alison who is such a big flirt as it is.... I kept telling her to stop goofing around and waving to him because he was there to take class and learn. Sujeet is a 2nd degree black belt and is training to test for 3rd degree. I talked to him for a few minutes after class. What a nice, well-spoken young man!
On another note, our local parent group had a seminar/conference two weeks ago and the keynote speaker was...... Carrie Bergeron Desai! Another very well-spoken inspirational young woman!
Just had to share our brush with fame with you all!

Jessika,
If there is any way possible definitely GO!!!! You will come away with such positive energy, it's hard to describe! Yes, Noah is getting OT, ST, & PT now but the information you'll get there will be specifically geared to DS. I came home with so very much information and so many new ideas to share with Alison's therapists... things they hadn't known about that turned out to really be effective strategies for working with Alison!
And I get what you're saying about your DH.... mine is very reluctant to spend money on something that he considers a luxury ( that was how he described the first conference I went to in Kansas City a couple of years ago!) but he's has already said that depending on where it is next year, he thinks it would be good for me to go again!!! I really think that he'll "get it" when he sees what a positive experience it is and just how much info there is to be gained!
And like Jackie says it is tough choosing between going to every possible workshop you can squeeze in and just soaking up all the joy and happiness there is in just visiting and meeting new people and knowing that everybody else is there for the same reason - because they love someone with DS!
So, again, in a word..... GO!!!!! You won't regret it!

Guess who will be visiting Alison for the first time!!! Not sure if you can tell from the picture, but she is VERY excited about the tooth fairy coming to visit tonite! When we asked her if she knew what the tooth fairy would leave for her, she said " Five dollars, cash dough baby, cash dough!" Sorry to say the tooth fairy is broke this week so it'll only be $1 but she'll still be thrilled I'm sure! Barb

I second A's suggestion to bring goodies!!! Also bring a picture of your little gal to show the team just who they are talking about! As a parent member of our district's CPSE & CSE, I've seen where the picture can make a BIG difference!
Good luck, all will well!

Seems the webcast has been nominated for "Webbie" awards, similar to the Oscars......... This is taken from a notice I got on Facebook..... Hi guys Fantastic news: The Specials has been nominated for 2 Webby Awards: Best Reality and Best Documentary Series! The Webby Awards are also known as 'the Oscars of the Web” and so it's wonderful to get this recognition. We're all very excited as the series will now reach a much greater audience. Also, if we win, we're off to a star-studded awards show in New York! But first we need your help. As a nominee, we are also eligible to win a Webby People's Voice Award, which is voted online by the global Web community. Voting runs until April 29th. So please vote for us by going to www.youtube.com/webby and voting in both the Documentary Series and Reality categories. (You'll have to register to vote but it's all pretty straightforward). Thanks for your wonderful support so far. Katy x Also here are the two links for each category; www.youtube.com/webby?x=documentaryserieswww.youtube.com/webby?x=reality
