Halloween was kind of a bust for Miss Alison.... she's had some kind of nasty upper respiratory viral infection for the past week or so and just feels lousy! Pediatrician tested her for H1N1 which fortunately came back negative. She lasted all of about 20 minutes before she asked to go home with her Dad and helped pass out candy. She's with her best buddy from school in the pics. We must have gone through about 500 pieces of candy!!! This was the first time in several years that the temperature was reasonable..... we've had to get costume big enough to put winter jackets underneath the last two years. It was windy but the tempurature was in the low 50's..... practically balmy by our standards!!! Love seeing everybody's kids! Barb

Cool is an understatement!!! Finally something reasonable for parents to get to help their kids. And I'm sure there will be the cool factor for the kids' peers!

Thanks guys! I've sent links for DownsEd to Alison's teacher. I gotta tell you guys how cool it is to have teachers and a principal who are seeking out this kind of info. Alison is the first kiddo with DS at her school and even her resource teacher hasn't worked with a kid with DS before this. They've gotton copies of several of the books in the DS series from Woodbine and the principal has even gotton subs in for Alison's classroom teacher, resource room teacher, and her 1 on 1 aide so that they could attend an all day seminar on DS that was presented by our local Parent Network that several docs from Childrens here in Buffalo and from Strong Memorial in Rochester. I truely do believe them when they say that they will do what needs to be done to help make inclusion work for Alison!
Thanks again! Barb

Does anyone know of a "best practices" for teaching our kiddos with DS? Alison's resource room teacher has asked me about this. Neither one of us has been able to find anything on the web. Just thought maybe one of you might know of a place to find this info....
Thanks,
Barb

abcnews.go.com/WN/PersonOfWeek/pleasant-valley-varsity-cheerleaders-spartan-sparkles-persons-week/story?id=8847280I saw this story on the ABC evening news last night and was brought to tears! I wish I could go and give these girls a great big hug for what they've done for other kids who happen to have special needs. At an age where so many teenagers are very self-absorbed and very critical of anyone who is different, these girls just go to show that maybe all the efforts we've made to show people that our kids are "more alike than different" really are making a difference in how society sees people with special needs. The most impressive part for me was when the one girl said that they never thought that they'd be taught things by the kids with special needs participating in this program. Barb ( who is smiling ear to ear just thinking about this group of girls!!!) ;D ;D ;D

I can not tell you how impressed I am with this latest swim by Karen Gaffney! Having taken a swim or two in October in the waters of Boston Harbor I am here to tell you guys, that water is COLD!!!! True there were generally adult beverages involved with my dips, it didn't change how cold the water is - 56 degrees that particular day. Here's the link to Boston Globe's coverage: www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/10/09/woman_with_down_syndrome_gets_into_the_swim/There's also a very short video clip there too. Well, we had our version of a Buddy Walk this past Saturday. After a week of rain, we were very lucky to have a nice sunny morning/early afternoon. The event ran from 10am to 2pm and the rain held off until 2:01pm!!! I kid you not, we were packing up the last of things when the first drops hit!!! Our parent group does an event call "Wheels Around the Park - A Down Syndrome Awareness Event". Due to some issues with being too close to the Niagara County Buddy Walk, we aren't able to do an actual Buddy Walk per NDSS. We had the mascots for the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, and Buffalo Bisons (minor league baseball team), games, prizes, clowns, facepainting and balloons galore. It was funny when we got back to the start, our MC who is a local newsanchor was standing there greeting everybody. Alison took one look at her and said" I know you! You the TV news lady!" Usually Alison has trouble placing people when she sees them outside of their usual setting so I was very impressed. Here's a couple of pics...... Barb

Hoping all goes well with whatever you all decide. Good sign that Emily seems to have had such a positive experience with her sleepover.
Hugs!!!

Wow.... nice job on the letter writing! Can I send Alison your way to have Brook work with her??? For some reason Alison has been getting kind of lazy about her letters lately, really frustrating for me.
And what a cutie pie your grandson is!
