Hi Kim, Congratulations on your new son! And welcome to UnoMas! When Alison was smaller, I checked the Gross Motor Skills book out of our local library. After having for 3 weeks, I finally returned it to the library and headed over to Barnes & Noble to pick up a copy for myself! I would definitely say it is worth the investment. Alison's PT has borrowed it to look for some new and different approaches to working with her. I would also recommend you take a look at Fine Motor Skills & Early Communication Skill in Children with DS. Both are published by Woodbine House. Can't tell you how often I'll go looking through each of these books, hunting down a new idea or way to work with Alison. Of course it would be great if you can look them over first by checking them out from your local library or if your DS support group has a lending library, but I really don't think you'd be dissappointed purchasing them sight unseen - but that's just my opinion! As for the importance of PT in our little ones, here's a link to an article by a PT from Dr Leshin's site: www.ds-health.com/physther.htmLike CC said, PT won't neccessarily make a child do something any earlier, but it will help them to learn to do it better! Hi!
Welcome to Unomas! I'm Barb, mom to 3 girls, Alison 22 months with DS, Sarah 8, and Caitlin 14.
My 8 yr old daughter had clogged tear ducts. She had constant yukky green drainage that the doc kept treating as pink eye - from the time she was only a couple of weeks old until she was about 18 months old. We ended up having the tear duct probing done when she was 20 months old. She has had absolutely no problems since then. The procedure was very quick - she was in and out of the OR in about 20 minutes. They did use general anesthesia which we weren't too thrilled about. All total I think we were at the hospital for about 2.5 hrs. For Sarah, it was a very successful procedure and I am glad that we went through with it. She was a little sleepy and groggy that afternoon but by dinner time, she was her usual peppy self.

Kim,
While my daughter doesn't have Hirschsprung's disease, she was born with imperforate anus and required a colostomy when she was just 2 days old. I won't say that my experience with the colostomy was "fun" by any stretch of the imagination, but it really wasn't too bad. She had the colostomy in place for the first 7 months of her life ( Alison is now 22 months old) and to be honest I think the whole thing was harder on me than it was for her! She had one other surgery to create the anal opening while the colostomy was in place. So far we have had no problems with stool leaking and with lots of fruit and veggies ( thankfully the kid LOVES her fruit and veggies!!) we have thus far had no problems with constipation which can so often be a problem for all of our kids with DS.
I hope that Jordan won't have to have a colostomy, but if he does, please feel free to email me with any ?'s you might have.

Alison got her first tooth on her first birthday! Bottom front one. Now at 20 months she has her 2 bottom front teeth and 2 top molars! She's got 2 more that are about ready to pop thru ( but I've been thinking that for about 2 months now!!!)

Shan,
The Jimmy Fund used to help out with this kind of stuff. It's been a long time since I moved from the Beantown area so I don't know if they still do. We're talking almost 17 yrs since I left! I grew up in Cambridge and am really looking forward to the week we have planned in August to visit all my family there!
Good luck!
