I still pop in once in a while. My first visit was when I was in the hospital delivering Joshie, and he turned eight in February!

I am SO anti-drug that I'm obnoxious about it. Drugs have to be a last resort, after everything else has been tried. I'm there now, with Joshie's sleep pattern. I'll spare you the details, but let's just say it's amazing how a child can go from an infant who needs to be awakened to nurse . . . to a six-year-old who wants to ONLY sleep between five and ten p.m. After doing a bunch of online research, I gave him 5 mg of melatonin tonight. (Hubby works nights and has it in the house to take occasionally.) Hubs is an RN and agreed it was worth a try. I'd still feel better hearing from other parents whose kids use sleep aids. Got any stories for me?

He can actually do a little better than this . . . unfortunately NOT in front of my camera! LOL! We are on our way, though, and he would practice all day if I had the patience. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ayxZkxxCrM

Thirty!?
I'll send one. Would it be too goofy if I sent it "from" Joshua and enclosed his picture, or would she get a kick out of that?

Hi, Bob . . . from another Oregonian! My son with DS, Joshua, just turned five.
Is Daniel excited about his new job? What will he be doing? Does he have other work experience? What a great opportunity for him! One of my friends has a son in his thirties who has worked at one of the second hand stores in our town for several years. I've seen him sweeping and he has carried things to the car for me . . . very helpful!

Ugh! I've struggled with Joshua stripping naked every chance he gets for about three years now. Someone here suggested I put one-piece blanket sleepers on him backwards, so that's his usual attire. We heat with wood, and it gets way too cold for him to be going bare. Nowadays, he knows how to reach behind and unzip his sleeper, so I have to run a baby safety pin through the zipper. I won't take him out dressed like that, but he usually is distracted enough when we're out and about to not try and undress. Last Sunday, he was at church in his stroller. I was paying attention to the sermon when a man behind me tapped my shoulder and pointed to Joshua, who had removed his clothes and thrown them into the aisle! I calmly re-dressed him, right there in the middle of church, and kept my hand on him for the rest of the service. So . . . I went in search of "real" clothing that Joshie can't get out of. Besides wanting him to be socially acceptable, I must be honest when I say I would take him with me when I go places more often if I didn't have to stop to get him completely dressed first. With older kids in the house to keep an eye on Joshie, it's just too easy for me to run to the store for milk all by myself, but I know more of those small outings would be good for Joshua. All that is to say I just ordered a couple suits that supposedly keep someone from undressing! You can get them with long or short sleeves and long or short legs, plus a cover over the back zipper to thwart the undressing even more. If I like them, I'll order a couple in each color. One good thing about kids with Down syndrome . . . most of them don't outgrow their clothing very fast! This is called a lockout suit and comes in tiny child's sizes up to large adult sizes:

Mom's Voice Flashcards is awesome! I don't even think it's intended for special needs, but Joshie loves it. His favorites are, of course, the pictures of the family. "Touch Daddy. Can you find Mommy?"
He also likes the Signing Time app that includes the song videos.

Jackie, I want to thank you for this advice, too. I can totally see me "encouraging" any interest of Joshua's in that way. I really appreciate the heads up!

Joshie is having a sedated ABR in October. He has never passed a hearing test (has had three). I have been so frustrated with the lack of direction I've received. He flunked his newborn hearing screen and that's all I was told. . . no instructions for follow up. A few months later, I decided to take him to an ear, nose, throat guy for advice. He did another hearing test, told me Joshie had significant hearing loss in both ears, and told me to take the results to our pediatrician. Our pediatrician referred us to an audiologist, who stood us up after we had driven an hour to see her! (The receptionist was sooo apologetic.) I took matters into my own hands and made an appt with another audiologist, who again told me to take the (poor) results to our pediatrician. I finally remembered a lady who had given me her card when Joshie was having heart surgery four years ago (!) and called her. She collected all the test results and arranged for this sedated test which is intended to fit him for hearing aids. So . . . That much is just ME, needing to vent. :-)
My real question is . . . Whose kids use hearing aids? How are they working? And, how the heck do you keep them on your child? Joshie strips naked unless I pin his clothing on him. I have a feeling his hearing aids might end up in a corner with his discarded jeans!
