That's not right!!! What state are you in ? Here in Indiana, I had to have Collin tested before they would put him on the list and they paid for that. Connie

Jessie, I went to a DS meeting in Indianapolis about 2 years ago. I heard a wonderful woman speak about her son who was 14 (I think). She told wonderful stories. The one thing I took from this is she treated her son age appropriately. She made him play with toys that were age appropriate...didn't deny him the joy of younger toys (if they were around) just replaced the ones at home with ones more age appropriate. She made him watch shows that "normal" kids watch....a 14 year old doesn't watch Barney... She did a lot of things like this. She talk about expectations...with understanding. If we don't expect this of them how will they ever learn. I don't always succed but I do try to expect Collin to do age appropriate things...Now he 6 but he still loves DORA and DEIGO and I do let him watch them because he has a sister that is only 4. But, he loves to watch Cody and Zach, Sponge Bob, Fairly Odd Parent etc.... We had been working on this for about 2 months or so at church (not consistantly...because we missed a few weeks here and there). I felt Collin should be able to go to the bathroom by himself after all he's 6 and most 6 y.o. do this. I started out by letting him go by himself, I would watch him go in, wait a few moments then go stand by the door. If, I would peak in to check on him he would tell me WEEV. Well, this week he told me..."Potty...OU STAY!!" Which was really neat because the lady sitting beside me actually understood what he said. Well, He went and at the time I should I gotten up and left to check on him the pastor started to pray so I could not leave. Talk about being a bit nervous (good thing I was praying)...But he did it all by himself and the best part of it was he came back to ME without any detours or other stops!!!! Who would have thought!! He did 2-3 other amazing things that day at church for me...it was a good day!!! I guess what I am rambling about is I believe you need to treat him age appropriately and expect these things out of him. You may not always succed but you've got to start some where. Connie

Mary L, Collin and Patrick are really really close to the same age and I can really really relate to speech not being his strong point. Because we struggle with that here, too. Got tears in my eyes right along with you girlie!!! Hugs, Connie

Alice, No real advice here but I don't know if it's he doesn't understand he's not suppose to bit his lip or he just doesn't have any control over that. Heck, I'm old enough to know better and still bite my lip/check when I've been numbed!! Hugs, Connie

Well Cindy, It must have been something in the air because I did the same thing yesterday!!! Collin woke up early Sunday morning with a 102.5 fever and was really snotty...I thought forsure we were coming down with pneumonia but it didn't. His fever broke later that afternoon and it was like he just had a terrible cold. The next day, Monday his face started to break out with little red dots...like bites or something. My first thought, it was the beginning of the chicken pox but just decided to wait and sent him on to school. He was there all day Monday, Tuesday then at 10:30 Wednesday they call and tell me they think he has Scarletina/Scarlet Fever because of this rash on his face and want me to pick him up now. The child gets out of school at 11...only 30 minutes left in the day. I proceed to tell them that no he does not have this that I have been through it before with my daughter. They wanted a note from the doctor!! Well, I proceeded to throw the my FIL (a doctor) said he's fine and no I won't be taking him back to the doctor and my DH will be there to pick him up at 11. My DH brings Collin to me at work and I show him what I found on the internet proving to him that the rash on his face was not Scarletina!! But then, I raise his shirt and there on his back is the tell tale sandpaper red rash from a strep infection that causes the scarlet fever. He did not have that when I put him on the bus that morning and the school didn't even notice that!! Did I feel like a really bad mommy. I took him to the doc for and antibiotic just to be on the safe side since it can cause major problems if left untreated with the heart and things!! But, I still had to call the school and tell them I was sorry!!! Man did I feel silly. Connie

Melinda, I think you will be surprised at how far he comes being in preschool. I know being in school and having someone besides mommy using different approaches has really helped Collin in some ways. Now Collin does not have a G-Tube so I am just throwing out suggestions but, have you ever tried a juice box or pack. When you put the straw in you can give it a little squeeze and some of the liquid will come out. This may give him the idea of how to swallow liquids from a straw and eventually suck from a straw. Now I am not saying this is not going to be messy because it can get really sticky but....Good luck!!! Connie

Ok, Each year we have to set our buget. To cover our budget we get our money from the tax base but we are only allowed to tax so much. A certain % of the property base. If for some reason we would exceed the amount bugeted/or allocated through the taxes we would have to go to the states and file a bond and ask for additional propriations. A bond is like a loan that has to be paid back. I told you it was hard to explain over the internet plus I'm not good at explaining it!! Connie

WHAT!!! YOUR QUESTIONING ME!!! HOW DARE YOU!!!!......LOL just teasing but I had to poke the bear!!! It's in my nature!! Ok....very hard to explain over the internet. But here we go. I work for a local governmental office in charge of overseeing the poor and by law we are required to provide certain basic necessities of life if a person/family qualifies. We are one of 5 units of government supported by the local property tax base....State, City, County, Township and School. These are the only 5 groups in Indiana that are allowed to levy taxes. For example...say we had a bad winter and we had a lot of request for utility assistance which depleated our budget. If someone else came in an made a request and qualified we could not tell them sorry we are out of money we would have to ask for additional appropriation or take out a bond to cover their needs. Just because we run out of money does not releive or obligations to follow the law. The same thing goes with the school district. Just because they say they do not have funding does not releive them of their resposibilities. The only thing that can do this is a legislative bill that is passed into law. Hope that helps!! Connie
