i am guilty of using the word, when i was young we called each other M.R. my wife never used the word and would not tolerate its use in her presents ever, before i didnt understand the pain and hurt the word causes, because i now have been "educated"i know better, how much money did christopher reeve spend on spinal cord injury research before he broke his neck? its all relative to our situation, so im a hypocrit but it doesnt make me wrong and now that i have been "educated" i get to "educate others ,, nothing more offensive than a reformed smoker;)

i agree whole heartedly with you guys ! we make up society, that is wy as part of society have to say enough is enough, btw the government did step in and outlaw the use of some words if they are connected to harrassment or violence, when a racial slur is used before during or after an act of violent that that constitutes a hate crime and in my state is punishable for up to two years in prison, my friend is a hispanic police officer, a skin head punk called him a sp.... and punched him in the face he got two years for the hate crime in addition to battery and the crime he committed in the first place. other instances of laws prohibitting free speech are yelling fire in a crowded theatre, committing a hoax, or just plain fraud, there is perjury, and obstruction if you tell an officer of the court a lie, but instead of making a law outlawing the use of the word retard we should change the way society uses the word. free speech should be protected but these people must learn that there are always consequences to what we say and do, ask your husband about free speech next time one of your kids calls you a bad name. (just an example, not to insinuate that that would or has happened)

blizzard.com who produces starcraft, warcraft, world of warcraft is making a very good effort to clean up the language on their web sights, they wish to make their game site family friendly, so i dont quite understand wy it is against their rules to use the n word ect. but its okay to use the r word, anyone who plays any blizzard game plz email them and explain to them how much we appreciate their effort to make blizzard a safe and fun place to play, chat, ect. but the use of the r word is inacceptable, it it hurtful to us and our families, it is hate speech in its most vilest form , remember there is no audience larger than young people playing on line video games, we talk about tv and music lyrics , but go to a games chat room and see how many times in a hour the word retard is used, plz join me and email or write to blizzard.com, and ask them to ban the use of the word retard on their site, this wont stop people from using it unfortunatley . because the will just misspell it to get by the censor , but it will make some gamers aware that that term is not acceptable , which unfortunately they probably dont know. and thats what its about,,,, awareness, thank you..
btw what was the name of the young man who gave the speach to his high school,,,,,,,,, i cant seeem to find it anywhere?

cc you forget we dont have to be bugged by the other jokes, the target of those jokes can defend themselves, freedom of speech is defined by the parameters of the society from which it is spoken, the question is is this the society in which we want to live?

we all enjoy the right of free speech, but there is also such a thing as community standards, it is against the law in the state i live in to say the f word in front of women or children, we have to raise a cry so loud and so long that like the n word it will no longer be acceptable to use the r word in a negative or derogatory way, we as members of society can make a difference if we stand up and speak for our children, friends and relatives, this isnt about free speech it about making it such a devastative monetary loss that hollywood will never produce another movie like this again, we can do this by demonstrating, sit ins , ect ,, and calling for the ban of this movie, we have the right as members of our communities to determine the standards to which we will hold each other to, we do this by speaking out, showing our communities that this is not only wrong ,it is evil, evil in its simplist form, attacking the most defenseless members of our society, im rambling i know but im so very p(mad)ed that i want to scream,

Body: Body: ----------------- Bulletin Message ----------------- From: Molly Date: Aug 7, 2008 2:35 PM not only should we boycott this movie we should let retailers know that if they sell copies of this movie (such as walmart, target, ect) that we will boycott their stores also, lets not forget it was target that was selling buttons , shirts, and other memorabilia that said "your such a retar... after the napoleon dynamite movie. lets not wait until the dvd is already in the stores before we let them know how we feel, we should right them right now so they will have no excuse this time. dennis
A national coalition of disability rights organizations has formally requested a meeting with executives at DreamWorks/Paramount to express concerns about negative portrayals of people with intellectual disabilities in “Tropic Thunder,” an R-rated raunchfest that is set to open August 13.
(Earlier posts here and here.
)
Ben Stiller plays two characters in the big-budget comedy: a fading action hero (above left with Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black), and “Simple Jack,” a kind-hearted dolt with bad teeth whose onscreen presence prompts frequent use of words like “retard,” “moron” and “imbecile.
”
At a hastily convened conference call yesterday, advocates voiced dissatisfaction over studio promotional materials that feature the slogan “Once upon a time … There was a retard,” as well as worries that the Simple Jack character reinforces hurtful stereotypes. The ad-hoc coalition also requested an advance screening of the film.
Among the organizations represented were the American Association of People with Disabilities, The Arc of the United States, Special Olympics, the National Down Syndrome Congress, United Cerebral Palsy, the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network, TASH, and the Alliance for Inclusion in the Arts.
While the group was optimistic that the meeting and screening would take place next week, it also discussed possible organized efforts to attract negative attention to the film.
In a New York Times article this morning that references this website, studio executives brushed aside questions about the way the film portrays people with disabilities.
Here’s a comment from Stacey Snider, chief executive of the DreamWorks unit:
Ms. Snider acknowledged the risks inherent in the film. It is the first from DreamWorks, she said, to use a so-called red band trailer, which attempts to limit access to online viewers 17 or older.
(Visitors to tropicthunder. com can view it only after clicking on “Restricted” and entering name, ZIP code and birth date.
)
But the film’s humor, she said, comes at the expense of its own heroes, a corps of knucklehead actors, rather than of the handicapped or anyone else. “The star-studdedness of it, and the absolute playability of it, trumps it all,” Ms. Snider said.
And from the film’s star, director and lead writer Ben Stiller, there was this:
“It’s hard for me to tell people how to react,” he said. “The whole point of the movie is about actors, and the length actors will go to to advance their careers.
”
For disability rights organizations, the stakes are high. “Tropic Thunder” is among the summer’s biggest films, with major stars, a production budget of about $90 million and a promotional budget of tens of millions more.
Whatever messages are embedded in the movie will soon be seen by millions of people, and could help to define how people with apparent disabilities are viewed by the public. Current figures from the U.S. Census Bureau put the number of Americans with cognitive disabilities at 14.3 million, or 6 percent of the population 15 and older.
There will doubtless be statements from studio executives who say the film is an equal opportunity offender. It pokes fun at racial stereotypes, with Robert Downey Jr. dressing in blackface and citing the theme song of “The Jeffersons.” Jack Black does fart jokes.
Everybody’s offended, right?
Let’s answer that with some questions. People of different races surely were involved in the making of this film, and were able to express opinions about which references were humorous and which might have gone too far. So were people with different sexual orientations.
How many people with cognitive disabilities were involved in the making of this film? Were any people with cognitive disabilities involved in focus groups for this film? How many are employed by Dreamworks, or by parent company Paramount?
And one more question for studio executives: If you had a family member or loved one with a cognitive disability, how do you think they would respond if somebody called them a “retard”?
