Jeannie, we had the same problem, the ins. company wouldn't pay for Justins' ST. I had his Ped. and teacher write letters and the doc a script with the diagnosis of Speech and Language impaired, and hypotonia, it worked and Justin gets ST at the hospital once a week and school daily. Would your ins. company at least pay for an evaluation. Justin still doesn't talk understandably but he does manage to get his point across . What has also helped is having him around alot of typical kids of course it helped that I watched my 5 nieces and nephews in those early years . He also does better with a microphone and Karaoke ok he is a little ham but he loves to hear himself. He can say some phrases like What do ya want and mom come on and some other words. As like Jessie my nephew non DS didn't start talking til he was 3 1/2 -4 yrs. mostly cause his brothers and sisters did everything for him and he didn't feel the need to talk. As for the hearing, Justin ended up having a loss in his left hear we didn't even know about, the audiologist explained it as if you were to put your hand over your mouth and talk while covering you ears, everything sounded muffled and distorted and that was what our little guy was hearing . I just wish we would have known sooner but he showed no signs of a hearing problem. The problem was corrected with T-tubes which he had for 2 yrs. He can babble with the best of them and even though you can't understand him we still ask him questions and he answers in his way and we go about like we understand him as not to discourage him. I look at it this way sometimes I think it's good we can't understand what he says sometimes cause then I think he would be sitting in time out quite a bit more especially when has that finger pointed at me

Justin had his out when he was 2 he's 5 now. He stayed over night to monitor fluid intake and also because of his pulmonary problems. He did GREAT by the next day he was drinking and he was only on Tylenol also, although they gave us the tylenol with codiene script at discharge just in case but we never had to use it. He also had sleep apnea and the T/A did the trick it also helped out with the Upper Respiratory bugs. He still gets them but now it's not that often and not that bad, whereas before they turned into pneumonia which in turn exaberbated his asthma and off to the hospital for at least a week stay. He also had an ASD/VSD not repaired and needed the antibiotic boost prior to surgery and also a neck xray.

Coopersmom, as with handsome boy Evan, Justin too was switched to xopenex rather than the albuterol, it is easier on the heart and on the hyperactivity that comes along with the steroid.

Prayers on the way!!!!!! Our 7yr old had it when she was 8 months old but unfortunately had to be hospitalized due to misdiagnosis and the ped not listening to mom grrrrrrrr, yes we never went back to that one again. Sorry but all I can remember is they gave her a stronger IV antibiotic and breathing treatments. Prayers headed your way for Cooper to make a speedy recovery.

I'd have her tested, Justin wasn't gaining weight as a baby and they were diagnosing him as failure to thrive until they tested his thyroid levels, he was finally diagnosed with hyperthroidism. Good Luck and Prayers on the way.

Yes CC being on antibiotics constantly is a concern. Chris system can get immune to them and when he really needs they may not be as effective.

When Justin was a baby we noticed he didn't like loud noises. He would just start crying and screaming, we kept taking him into crowds and parades and when loud noises would come up we would laugh and clap our hands yelling yea!!!!!! eventually he started doing the same things clapping, and yelling yea!!!!. And now he is fine with the noises except he still doesn't like the smoke detector, ok so maybe I may have burnt something at one time

Hi Kathy,
Have you thought of perhaps getting referrals to the other places you mentioned. Maybe just doing an evaluation type thing to make sure what is being done at home is what should be done and maybe they would have some other ideas to pass on to those who do come out. Just a thought and maybe just use those services in the next city or wherever for re evaluations, say like every 6 mos to a year.
