It IS hard to deny our kids the things they seem to enjoy most in life, isn't it.
Well you put all my angst into one simple sentence isn't that just like you Jackie. Couldn't be a more true statement. Yeah I know that I had a hard time letting go and trying full force no holds barred, something new. We have a joke in our family that if Olivia was my sisters child she'd be 1200 pounds by now. Cause my sis is a great cook and always trying to feed everyone and Olivia is her BIGGEST FAN. I swear she cooks all day and has everyone eating all the time. Me? LMAO I am just the opposite thankfully for Olivia's sake. It's funny cause she is fine with other stuff I make her. Like after school we steam veggies or occasionally get the kind from the store you nuke that steams in there. But since we live across from a great once a week farmers market with spectacular fruit and veggies I can buy fresh. And Olivia is JUST as excited to get a BIG plate of steaming veggies as she is a sandwich. PLUS since she is eating the low cal stuff she can eat MORE. ( or at least it looks big to her lol I am also doing the smaller plate thing but Livs onto that one.. ) Does Emily savor her food forever? Olivia does looking at her you'd think she wolfed down her food but it takes her literally 45 minutes to eat her veggies afterschool and as long as or longer to eat a meal. When we used to go out to eat more we would have her order first so she could start towards the end it sorta backfired on us as she likes to EAT with all of us rather than start solo. The social gal in her. BUT BOY we used to wait an extra 20 or so minutes after we were done then force Olivia to wrap up the rest of her food which always pissed her off. She thought we would all like to sit around for another hour and watch her eat. lol. Thanks Jackie I will check out the cards. It's a huge help I am trying to bombard her world right now and anything like that is appreciated.Have a great weekend. (((HUGS)) me <3

I really enjoyed reading this thread, because yes, we all struggle with weight! My husband and I really try to model for Kaelyn how to eat, even at the age of 2. It IS hard tho, when one of her first signs was ice cream! How freaking cute. And when she asks for a "snack" while eating breakfast!! But we go for organic and natural foods as much as possible. She will eat anything wrapped in a tortilla, so that is how she gets her veggies a lot of times! Here lately she has been on a protein and carb diet-the girl cannot get enough meat it seems! But she's started walking and we figure she is using some new muscles and needs the protein! ha. She still has chicken legs, so I'm not too worried. But way to go both Emily and Olivia! Kind of gets me motivated again. I've done WW in the past and really liked it. To me, it was similar to the ADA diet, which I should be following because of my diabetes. Too bad we couldn't all get together and take walks or workout together!!!

Hi Brandi thanks somuch for the encouragement. Olivia has been doing sooo well. Hasn't even missed the bread which I believe is a BIG part of her weight gain as far as what we did to her. She ate lotsa sandwiches. Bad Stephanie.... She's also off all the juice... Water crystal light and a tiny glass of oj in the am. She's loving her light dinners now and I take her to the store a couple times a week so she can pick out what she wants and we go over if it's a good choice. She's very into lettuce wraps like pf changs I love to make it for her. and veggies and well I dunno she really is catching on. I am soo proud. Her karate teacher came up to me wednesday and said how amazed he was with her. I mean this is a park class she has only been to 6 5 classes as she was sick in may for almost 3 weeks. Well he speaks the moves in japanese only and is very into repect and focusing. Olivia can get up so fast after doing their excercises in the beginning of class. They hafta get up real quick and get into left fighting stance. Never ever thought she could move so fast but the teacher and all the kids are highly motivating to her. OMG he speaks in japanes and she knows what to do and kids who have been there over 6 months don't. Typical kids mind you.And BTW the typical kids help her if she needs it without any prompting from anyone thats just how this guy teaches. Ya know that not being so full of yourself humble stuff... Anyhow Brandi just want to reinforce what jackie talks about sometimes. Our kids may be tiny due to heart surgeries etc but just remember that teaching good choices and only keeping certain foods in the house NOW is the way to go. I mean the no chips juice boxes etc. Go for eating real fruit to get the fruit for the day rather than sweet sugary horrible juice boxes. ( they make sugar free ones now by cool aid so if u hafta send to school... I say this because first off Jackie has always been thee to share Emilys weight stuff and stuff she might have done different and because every conference I have been to I would say 90% and up of the adults with ds are very overweight borderline obese and morbidly obese. I wish they would teach this to our kids in early intervention and continue it with preschool and school. Cause with guidance we have some amazing kids who if we could limit their intake of crud we may be able to help them achieve a healthy body as an adult. It's just one more thing that makes our kids look and feel different than their typical peers. Believe me Olivia was looked at and teased waaaaaaaaaaaayyyy more by strangers kids not about ds but her weight. and their not exactly sweet about it. I remember vividly Olivia coming home one day saying some boys were laughing at her calling her FAT. Broke both our hearts. wish they would add health and nutrition as a service for our kids at the very least starting in preschool. and continuing thru high school. It's soo soo important. Okay enuf of me thanks again Brandi. Kaelyn is lucky to have u as a momma. (((HUG))) Steff

You know...I am sooooo happy for Olivia...Emily is doing everything right and has been for several months with less than 10 lbs to show for it...sigh. But listening to the wt loss programs on tv this week they brought up Polycystic Ovarian something or other syndrome which is what Ed thinks she has. She has not had a period for years so she fits all the parameters for it except her labs come back pretty good. I do not know what the next step is for treating this and its all made harder because she is 500 miles away. Despite being 100 lbs overwt she has good everything else lab wise and takes only a tiny bit of thyroid. They have joined Golds gym and go 3 or 4 times a week so know she is getting her exercise in. At Katies she had snack cabinets to raid but we know she seldom did this. Now she has no snack cabinet so she SHOULD be losing faster. Marnie has suggested that she and Emily do a stint on The Biggest Loser...wonder if they would go for that...but I couldnt take the stress of her being on something like that...LOL.
I am so Happy now that Liv is seeing success. I bet she feels a lot better too. What is her goal at this point? I wish someone would take ME by the hand. Been watching Susan post about her wt. losses and her gym time...I am afraid I am a poor example now myself.

I have PCOS so I know how hard it is to lose weight. And for me it was hard to get pregnant (although I think that was more God making us wait until just the right time for me to be ready to have Kaelyn!). and of course now I have no thyroid. So I can relate to the weight loss battles!
I worry about when Kaelyn starts school-I know they use candy and food reinforcers a lot for special ed kids-they even mentioned it at the little pre-meeting we had for her this month! So, I will be making sure it is very plainly stated that they will NOT do this with Kaelyn! She loves verbal praise, so that is all she needs! I don't want her starting her school career thinking she needs candy for every little good thing she does! Candy is a very rare treat for us around here!

I also love the over sized, long sleeve, wide neck crochet top for some sun protection or if it gets a bit breezy. ezpeezydeals.com/deal_company/milanoo-coupon-code/
