Hello, all! It's been about 12 years since I've posted - but I've checked in on everyone periodically! I thought this would be a good place to get more information on what various states offer in terms of graduation options for students receiving special ed. services. In Maryland, there are only two options: regular diploma or certificate of attendance. Basically, a student's eligibility for the alternate curriculum places them in the certificate track. Virginia has just adopted a Modified Diploma in addition to their certificate and regular diploma. I'm preparing for a meeting with a large advocacy group, and would appreciate any information you could provide! Thanks.

In TN we only had those 2 options as well. And, in order to receive a regular diploma, students have to pass all the standardized "Gateway"tests over the course of the 4 years in high school. We realizd when Emily was in about the 7th grade that she simply could not test well on those standardized tests. It tore me up at first. Ok......it tore me up for a while! Then, I went to a a Ds conference in Atlanta and met the mom of a young woman with Ds who was a Senior in high school. The mom explained that she was FINE with her daughter receiving exactly what she had earned.....the certificate of attendance. I started at that time to look at things differently.
For Emily.......going through graduation and everything else associated with her Senior year was no different than for anyone else. She received what looked exactly like a diploma, and she has never ever noticed that it does not actually say "diploma".
I think it's an individual thing. For us....the certificate of attendance was our only option. For that reason, we're ok with that.

Diploma certificates of any of the exam are difficult to attain. Got MBE Practice Questions and sample guides from online tutorials couple of months ago. Me and my friend are doing joint study and solving the questions with the fundamentals and formulas taught in classes. I am sure that we will come off with flying colors in our real exam. |

I think having a diploma is much more important than just having a certificate of attendance because your future career depends on it. Studying in college and getting a diploma is certainly much more difficult, but it makes more sense.
