Guys....I have been searching through the old posts on behaviour, transitions, etc... because all these are current issues with a friend of mine and her son in his current kindy and some of Patrick's as well. But I have a question about this one that I am hoping someone can clear up for me.
What is the difference, if any, between a psych eval and an IQ test??? Our district wants to do a psych eval and I have refused so far...I thought they were the same thing....is that wrong?

Our psych eval that was done on Katie... is more of a development testing. They tested her, Speech, physical abilites and her cognitive abilities and rated her overall.
They were reluctant to test Katie at all because they feel that age 3 the child is not ready for a formal testing.. and they were right. The hardest part was keeping her focused. and because of previous health issues, that hurt her early development she is behind in a lot of things.
Not to mention... that at 3 years 8 months... being rated 2 years, 4 months for overall development is a large gap... but in three years.. that gap may not be so bad...
KWIM?
ramble ramble ramble.
Hugs Tricia, hope that helped at least a little.

Tricia, let me see what info I can find, but I always thought a psych test is where you "function" and what state of mind you are in, so to speak.. and an IQ test is where you are at in your ability to learn.... if that makes sense.
Now.. that doesn't mean that in the education community they don't mean the same thing or overlap.
Russell got "tested" or "re-evaled" as they called it after he turned 6 this year. Usually they wait until they are 5 or 6 to do the tests and enter Elementary School from what I have gathered. They did more then one kind of test on him but i don't know if the gave him a standard IQ test... they were more psych and cognitive type tests that can, I guess, be kind of the same.. but they were used to figure out where he was cognitively and function-wise and if there are any other learning disabilities... like Autism. Russell has a MED DX of Autism but not a SCHOOL DX of Autism.. because school testing sometimes uses different tests and ways to determine these things. Russell is School age DX'd with Mental Retardation and Vision Impairments. BUT.. it IS noted in his chart that he has a Medical DX of DS, and Autism. They have to list it both ways.

This site tells about tests like this in general, not so much towards spec needs but just the different types of tests that can be administered and what they are. www.guidetopsychology.com/testing.htmA.

Hmmmmm TRICIA, I am not good at explaining the difference BUT there is between an IQ test and psych eval.
Here in my neck of the woods anyway, only kids that are classified under special ed get a psych eval BUT ALL kids get an IQ test.

Hey CC, at what age do ALL kids get an IQ test? I know in Cali when I was 5, I had a few of them done but NOT through the school district. I thought they did away with IQ testing in schools? Maybe that was just in CA? Is this a state mandated thing? Or just in your school district? Just curious.... a.
