We are huge fans of Dr. MacDonald's (Dr. Jim's) methods, and I saw him when Ethan was only eight months old. I took his full-day pre-conference workshop, and it was some of the best money I have ever spent. This man cares SOOO much about kids, and affording them the opportunity to communicate. We took Ethan to see him at his home in Columbus, OH when he was under fifteen months old, had a wonderful visit, and came home armed with lots of communicating strategies. Last year, I helped work his booth at the conference, and was just flat-out amazed at the depth of his commitment. I have seen him give his materials to families free of charge who could not afford them, and he gives VERY freely of himself and his time to help families. The man and his methods are an absolute treasure. He has a list-serve on Yahoo groups, and answers parents' questions on a regular basis. There is much information and expertise to be gained there, and the parents share strategies share very freely. If you are interested in subscribing to his list-serve (which has 956 members!) here's a link: health.groups.yahoo.com/group/communicating/

A.,
Crack me up girlfriend! Yup, that's the guy I told you about. I was just looking around here to see where I have put his video tapes. I'd like to send you one to watch, because watching his interactions is worth THOUSANDS of my words.
If you look at the link for the list-serve, you'll see that the group is actually listed under autism. He does LOTS of work with kids with both autism and DS, and of course those who are dually diagnosed.
I'm going to go back to looking for that videotape......!

MB,
Dr. Peuschel was at the Chicago Conference too. What a inspiring man!! And I loved Chris Burke! Quite the "movie star"...the kids just loved him. And he had a ball with everyone at the dances. I wish he would do another series. He did more to promote positive feelings about down syndrome than anyone I know. I know his performance affected me greatly and changed my thoughts about people with downs....little did I know I would experience these feelings firsthand. Dolly

I started really thinking about my time with Russell and how we interact. Now, I still haven't seen the tape Laura is hunting down for me but I think we might already be doing some of what is being desribed on his site and here. I just never looked at it like that. Russell does "take the lead alot" and we copy and have fun with what he is doing. And now, it's not self stimming LMAO.. I was just kidding with that. Most of the time it's through song ... but I think we may be doing some sort of this now. I was sitting on my bed with him and really thinking about how we interact with Russell. You just have to get INTO his bubble first A.
