Hi everyone! I just have a quick question on when your kids walked. Andrew has begun to pull himself up on the living room table, couch, open drawers, etc, anything and everything he can pull up on ... he will. I was just curious how long it took your little ones to walk after they started pulling up and crusing. I know every child is different, but I just wanted a rough idea of how long I've got until the "REAL" baby proffing needs to be done. We've already done the cabinets, cords, etc. but don't yet have locks on the basement door and stuff like that. We're in trouble now!!LOL! ;D. Any rough ideas on how long until we need to go to home depot would be great! lol Thanks!

Hello ! My daughter Eirn started to walk right at the age of 2 I'm telling you....it was her ACTUAL birthday ! LOL ....I had bought her slide & climber for her birthday.....and she was actually able to use it....stairs and all. Erin did very little crawling as I recall.....she was GREAT on stairs.....could climb right up them....and it was actually a "play" thing she did. Once she started walking....she had it mastered within 2 days and there is no stopping her at all ! She is a VERY physical child and Gross Motor has always been huge strength for her.

My daughter started crawling at 17 months, pulling up at 18 or 19 months. Suddenly, one day, she just started standing up in the middle of the room. She was 23 months. Then shortly after, she started cruising. She took her first steps at 25 months but wasn't able to walk across the room until she was 30 months. Her walking improved very slowly. She will be four in September and now she is jumping. She loves to jump! It seems like all the gross motor milestones have come so slowly and she had to work so hard to get there. Her gait is still wide like a toddlers but her balance is very good.

OK...I got my baby book out for this one, so I would get it all straight! Nicholas crawled at 9 mos, pulled himself up at 11 mos, cruised some furniture at 13 mos, stood by self at 15 mos, , took first step at 18 mos, walked alone at 20 mos, although his main mode was still crawling. The week we got home from heart surgery (at 21 mos) he completely stopped crawling and started walking full time. I think in his case, he needed that extra energy boost the surgery gave him! ;D

Meghan pulled to standing at her first b-day party...I don't remember if that was the first time or not, but I remember it so well because it was on a toy someone gave her. She took her first unassisted steps at 18 months and was full out walking at 20 months. laurie

I remember my son took one independent step at 14mons and did not take another until he was 19 mons and at that time started walking. He always did well with gross motor, but was very delayed with speech.

I remember this well....Emily was 11 months old when she first crawled across the room and was exactly 2 when she was really walking....by that I mean that holding on to my hand...she and I walked the one block in Denver to the kids school...I did let go of her hand and let her walk in alone.....because I had told the secretaries in the office...I was DETERMINED she would walk into Walnut Hills School before we moved to Amarillo...LOL...and we did.....tediously...but we did!!!
She actually took her first independent steps...3 whole steps ...just a few weeks before when the realtor came and pounded the SOLD sign in our yard....I let go of her hand...and she walked over to the sign....tears of JOY!...both for the sale of the house and the walking. (We had just listed our house ...the day before...lucky us!!!).
As far as her WALKING development....she was almost 5 before she really developed a steady gait...most of the time all you had to do was "nudge" her and she toppled over....she also wasnt very good in gymnastics on the balance beam and couldnt walk the curbs heel to toe like other kids her age even though she wanted to sooooo badly.
But like all things in her life....it finally happened....

Peanut is still not crawling, but will "walk" if she is holding your fingers. She does not pull herself up consistently enough to say she is doing it. It seems that most of the other kids I see or hear About are 24 mos before they walk. Our PT told us to expect anywhere from 9 mos to 24 mos. Keep up the good work, remember our kiddos will do what everyone does, just at their own pace. In time all will come. Take it one day at a time is my motto. Robyn

Thanks to all of you for the great info. It seems the general age is between 15-24 months or so. I'm thinking we have a few weeks before we have to batten down the hatches LOL! I honestly can't remember being this excited when my other kids started pulling up and crusing around. Isn't life funny? I love looking at it from a whole different perspective. I only wish I had this input years ago! I'm hoping my kids will learn from all this and really enjoy the small things in life(no matter how big!). Thanks guys! -Trisha

My mother said I walked at sixteen months. She said I was slow in holding up my head too. I don't know what they did to help me walk though. Probably the same as you all have done.

In the book Babies With Down Syndrome, it says 24 months is the average age for a child with Ds to walk.

Carter stepped independently at 30 months, walked across a room at 33 months, then up and decided walking was for him a week before his third b-day. He walks everywhere now very solidly, steps over obstacles, catches adn throws a ball overhand while standing, kicks a ball, and is experimenting with the trampoline, nut not very into it. His PT said he made about 9 months' advancement in 3 weeks. We should all be so productive.
