Ryan, as most of you know, if pretty non-verbal. He was trying to tell me something today, and I wasn't getting it at all. He will usually resort to his ACC, but he actually said "r-a-t .... rat" like a spelling word. I said "rat?" he said "YES!!!" He was trying to tell me about a part in Charlotte's web and was referring to the rat.
What a trip, he spelled a word he couldn't say!! YAY RYAN!! ;D ;D

He's reminds me of my Matthew. Sometimes I can understand him and when I cannot he surprizes me and will sound out the word ever so slowly so hopefully I will understand him. He is 9 yrs. old and I have been working with him on oral motor activities and it has helped. I'll be ever so grateful when I can hold a conversation with him where I will truly "comprehend" what is being said. He gets mad at times and will tell me evermind... and walk off. Then other times he'll try to "show me" what he's talking about. Anyhow, tell Ryan "good job!!!" Thumbs up! thats what Matthew and I express to one another when we've accomplished something. So Thumps up! to Ryan.

Thanks everyone - I love the cheers for Ryan!!
He is learning to type, and we are hoping to upgrade his ACC in the next year. The new device will have speech synthesis (sp?) so when you type a word, it will say the word, not the letters which is what his current device does.
Progress in the speech output area has been so very slow for Ryan, so having this alternate means has made communicating with him better. I still feel bad that the device is limited to what is programmed. For example, he wanted to say that a ride at Disneyland was scary, but that emotion hadn't been programmed yet, so he kept saying "excited - no" - his way of saying it is an emotion by not "excited".
When I get sad for him, I realize that he doesn't know any different, and he accepts this more than I do. He realizes he doesn't have many options and works with what he has. What a great kid!
