I live in the wonderfull (most of the time) place called Israel. If not for the political situation(which I won't go into, or I might cause a real argument here) it would be even greater. My biggest problem is that I an teaching and reading to Ricki in a language that is not my mother tongue. (For example, try teaching verb tenses, spelling*, etc. in a language not your native one!) *(I'm bad enough a speller in English!)

OK.....I just read a post about glasses on the general subject side....so I came looking for this post to bring back up. Patrick had a rough winter, with pnuemonia? in November and the flu last month. But...things are slowing down, we have just done the ENT thing and are good for 6 months, just did the Ds clinic in January....so.....I think its finally time to tackle the eyeglass issue. I am DREADING this. So....I took my mom to chose her new glasses last week and the optician gave me lots of advice about things to look for when I get Patrick's glasses....type of material, etc. But, that shop really didn't have any frames for small children. After rereading this post, I think that I need to hit Walmart for the replacement guarantee. I am wondering, for those of you with kiddos in glasses....what type material (frames and lenses) and brand of frames do you recommend? Do you get the ones with nose pads? I saw a little pair recently with nose pads that instead had a little piece of clear plastic that attached at each side of the nose pad and went up over the nose. Seemed like that would be maybe a little more comfortable and hold the frames in place. Do you recommended the arms that wrap around the ears or try a strap? Patrick will be 3 in April, so he will still take a rather small pair. His perscription shows him to be very far sighted, about a +3.75 and +4.00 . Thanks for your info. ~Tricia Been doing some surfing on the internet and found this article: www.allaboutvision.com/buysmart/kidseyewear.htmThe article also has a gray box that links to some related pieces that look pretty relevant. This is a fun site that has an on-line vision test! library.thinkquest.org/C005949/diseases/hyperopia.htm

Okay Okay... someone please help me.... I think we are about to embark on the glass train!
We go on April 3 to see if Katie actually will need them. How did you guys get your kids to wear glasses. I can not imagine this 2 1/2 year old monster wearing them. Heck, the first thing she does when she comes near me... is rip mine off.
This may turn out to be the biggest challenge of her short life. Actually the challenge will be mine... after all, we all know she is gonna do EXACTLY what SHE wants!
Hugs and thanks in advance for all of your wonderufl advice.... PLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSEEEEE!

Tricia, when Rhienne first got glasses, I went with whatever would fit - in Rhienne's case it was a pair of Snoopy glasses that had Woodstock on the arms. They were very cute wire frames. They had wrap-around ear thingys which were a godsend for holding them on his face, cause he didn't have much of a bridge to hold them on. They didn't have the clear plastic nose piece though.

OH KATHLEEN!!!!! I FEEL your pain hunny!!!! I have to say, Russell is suppose to wear glasses even though he had his lens implants and won't AT ALL. The perscription is SO SLIGHT that it bugs him to have them on. So, we don't have him wear them and the docs don't say anything....
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and a BIG HUG to you!

I know exactly how you feel. Adam has had glasses since he was 11 months old. We now purchase the easy twist, he hasn't been able to break the frame yet. You can twist them in any way you want and they have not broken. Our problem is now Adam hiding them all over the house the second our back was turn. Smart little cookie! ;D Good Luck!

HELP PLEASE we just got Deven his glasses yesterday and already i am out of ideas on how to keep them on. My gosh I am truelly amazed on how he has been able to function without them ,very strong Rx (thank God for profile lens lol)we have the strappe, but still he will pull them off one way or another ,my dilemma is that i do not want him to get so mad from us trying that he will totally refuse to wear them but yet he does need them really badly. Remember this is a little guy that not even 1 day old already was removing his oxygen tube from his nose into his mouth time and time again (low muscle tone my butt lol) please I can use any suggestion you can give me (what work for a child this young )he is 14 month old and very active ,determined and stubborn already .

Marie, Rhienne got his first pair at 15 months, so I know how you feel. It too quite a while before he would wear them for any length of time. We just kept putting them back on him, not necessarily every time he took them off, but pretty frequently. Eventually he wore them for longer periods, but we had to always be on the lookout for them on the floor - or out the car window - or in the trash - or anywhere else for that matter. One thing though - did his ophthalmologist prescribe the full prescription for him? Rhienne wore 1/2 his prescription for about 2 years before he got the full prescription, cause his eyes are +6.25 and +7.5. His doctor said that because the prescription is so strong, he never would have worn them that strong at the outset. So he gave him plenty of time to adjust well to those and leave them on all the time before going to the full prescription. However, I will see how it goes now, because I have to pick up yet another new pair cause his astigmatism got worse - wonder if the change in prescription is gonna make him not wear them again?

I think for Russell, since he was legally blind with no lenses, it was easier for him to wear them.. because he REALLY needed them to see. But he STILL took them off alot. Then when he got him implants last year, he wouldn't wear glasses anymore because he could see without them and the perscription was a mild one. I think the children that NEED the glasses worse, tend to wear them better... THAT doesn't help though... LOL You know something else... our Ped Opth out here in St. Louis Children's hosp sees LOTS of children and LOTS of kids with disabilites and LOTS of children w/DS. HE said out of everyone, for some reason, children w/DS do NOT like to keep their glasses on.. like it may be more of a SENSORY issue... He said none of them usually keep them on. I know bribes with videos, VERY stimulated play, ect... with the glasses on.. then let them take them off for a rest sometimes.. helps.. but you have to figure out what works for your child. We also found after all sorts of different frames that the wire ones worked best. Our old Ped Opth office had this technician that INSISTED on plastic frames on Russell has a baby because of the durability factor.. BUT the would slip off his poor nose and were SO bulky for his cute little head. Then I decided to get wise and TELL them we wanted wire frames.. AHHHHH what a difference. We have used those frames with that wrap around nose piece and that works pretty good too! Also, we used Walmart in the past because of their warranties AND Sears has a WONDERFUL warranty policy on their kid packages too!!! We usually go to Walmart or Sears for ours... OH!! And they both have the BEST selection for the price!! I have been EVERYWHERE.. TRUST ME! Sears even has SESAME STREET FRAMES!!!!!! THAT was the last pair we had.. complete with a little ELMO on each arm LOLOL!!! Party On Garth! A.

OK, you guys...Aidan has had his glasses for a YEAR now and STILL won't wear them for more than 3 seconds! And now...he's scratched the lenses so bad that we will have to go soon and get them fixed, or replaced... if need be. ugh! He is legally blind, but he won't wear them. I think it might be a sensory issue, perhaps...or maybe he's just so used to not seeing things that when he DOES have his glasses on, things just "JUMP" out at him... that would be kind of weird. I have had to change eye doc's, but I am going to ask about getting a prescription for 1/2 of what it's supposed to be (a -10!), like Kathleen suggested...that's a good idea, and of course, I would have never thought of it! Thanks Kathleen! And A...can you explain to me a little bit about the lens implants and what Russell's eyesight was like before the implants? Would love to know more about them. Thanks! Staci

OMG.. this post was funny and scary. Katie got fitted for her glasses two weeks ago.... She looked like she had "fly" eyes. They were so huge on her. so we had to special order them smaller. I amdreading the day they come. I know she will not wear them..she barely let us put them on to measure them.
I am not sure about her prescription... they are +3's. Anywone know what this means?
And Does anyone know... does Wal-Mart accept medicaid insurance???
Hugs.. and please pray for us... LOL.. those glasses should be here in early May!
